I am going to build a couple of websites for friends of ours for their bed and breakfast, and once I get the hang of it, I also plan on building a site for our office. I have been playing around with YAhoo's web builder, and think I am ready to tackle the real thing.
What program would you recommend that I purchase to build them correctly? We already have purchased the domain name for the office. And then I understand once I am ready I have to find a place to host them. I am pretty comfortable with the comp, but by know means a programmer.
Thanks for your imput, I know I can always trust you all!

I've been doing websites (not professionally) for a few years and have always used the notepad program that came with Microsoft Windows.
I've found that a lot of those website programs insert unnecessary code (example: Microsoft Frontpage).
When putting a website together, I've always used this site as a quick reference.

Adobe GoLive, Macromedia Dreamweaver and Microsoft Frontpage are the major ones.
You might try something like this depending on the size of your website. I imagine that a B&B wouldn't have more info than a couple pages with pics/maps/and contact info.
Check out this link for web hosts if you don't want to host it yourself, but I'm sure other people have some good recommendations for a cheap/reliable host.
There's also several template websites out there: This is one example. Useful if you don't have a lot of experience or time.

For a free program, NVU and Amaya are used a lot, but you'll need to learn many things by searching the web to use them effectively. If these friends or your office are going to pay you for your work and you want to do this professionally without learning a lot, I would suggest Frontpage for its wizards and help information. Also there is a good chance that your friends or office will have easy access to Frontpage if they want to do minor edits to change info in the future.
start easy. get a WYSIWYG site builder like frontpage or namo webeditor (i use this one).

I disagree. Frontpage designed websites are a major headache that are best avoided. It's better to start off on the right foot and use a serious product like Dreamweaver or GoLive. Macromedia's Contribute will allow others to easily make changes to the site and GoLive is due for an update very soon (along with the other programs in Adobe's Creative Suite) when CS 2 comes out in May.

Some links for you;
Go to CoolHomepages for a bit of inspiration. Go to Open Source Web Design for free templates, if you don't want to make your own. Go to Uno.edu for easy Dreamweaver lessons. Go to Adobe's on GoLive Tips and Tutorials section here. Go To Tutorial Guide for tips on lots of things. go to Webhosting Talk for info and problem solving.
Dreamweaver has no unnecessary cluttery code, unlike FrontPage. Switching to Dreamweaver was one of the better choices I've made in my computing life They have a 30-day free trial of the full-version here
does dreamweaver have an "easy" mode or version (go live?)? kind of like how photoshop elements is to photoshop pro?
notepad is not wysiwig. unless OP is comfortable with HTML code. i don't have patience for HTML when i can "draw" it instead. i only manipulate the HTML for little tweaks here and there.

I use GoLive and it is very easy. I have both my daughters creating websites using it as well.

The mozilla suite comes with a free web editor called Composer. I'm not sure how it is if you start from scratch, but I've had good success with it on predefined templates. It's something you can try before you throw some money down at least.
I know no HTML, but am willing to learn. I have a question about the builders. As I said I have been messing around with Yahoo's Website Builder (hey it was free ) And accually am pretty proud of the site I made, there are 5 pages etc. But if I was to take this to a site outside of Yahoo, I don't believe I could use it. Am I going to need to know HTML to have a site that flows right on the host sites?
Thanks for all the info so far! You all have been keeping me busy! Maybe it is a good thing I broke my leg and can't walk, will make me concetrate if that is possible

You can dl a free copy of 1st Page 2000 from Eversoft --- Click Here
This is an excellent web editor with several levels of expertise built in from novice to expert.
( disregard the virus warning you get when installing...the "Six buttons from Hel* " script is not a virus.)
Do not attempt to use Notepad to do webdesign. It is difficult, error prone, and really only for testing little snippets of code.... or for those wishing to learn HTML. The context of your post implies that you are not an HTML expert so I would avoid using Notepad.
If you sign up for some webspace at 1and1 they will give you a very nice web authoring tool called NetObjects Fusion. (My favorite - has the Hemond seal of approval) They have a promotion going on now...6 months for free.
I like Dreamweaver too but it is extremely expensive, unless you get one of those (ahem) "funny" versions available for the time it takes to download.
I vote for Dreamweaver. As has been said already there is a trial on it or you can purchase an older version and still have something good on your hands. Dreamweaver is WYSIWYG and it has a built in ftp program which you will need to "push" what is on your system to your webhost.
It doesn't produce messy code like Frontpage and if you want to take a stab at learning html you certainly can.
Wait until you see that you can do just what you did on Yahoo and THEN some! You will wonder why you didn't move over sooner.
Seriously, I began my first site on Geocities (now Yahoo) a gazillion years ago and started with their built in stuff until I went the advanced route. It was good for baby steps and learning and now people actually pay me to update their sites. Scary! LOL
I downloaded Dreamweaver trial. Googled sites with info on how to use, came up with a bunch. Is there any one or two that are the best. I can say right now that writing HTML is above me at this point. Am I missing something or is there an option that I basicly have a template that I can paste pictures, backrounds and text on?
The kids were off today due to a snow (yeah, major snow 34" in one day) day. So I haven't been able to get near the comp, but for a minute or two hear or there.

I've been following this thread thinking it was IrishSix Mom's Son [you know, the "going-to-college" kid with the BIG IDEAS about building his own *FIRST* HONKING PC (at his MOM's expense of course!) ] HEY MOM - WT* did you get 34" in the SPRING?!? [Mountain Time Zone? ST=??]
IrishSix said: ...I can say right now that writing HTML is above me at this point. No way!
Maybe producing GORGEOUS WEB SITES is above (BOTH YOU AND ME!), but HTML ain't that hard. It's just like the TAGS on these Forums. Let's make an "Unordered List" "UL":
Yep.
This ain't that hard..
What ELSE can I do here?
Well I can BOLD some text.
Or I can ITALIZIE some text..
HIGHLIGHT is ok, but BETTER WHEN ALSO BOLDED IMHO
"Ordered List" "OL" is another choice":
One for the money.
Two for the show.
Three to get ready.
Four to go.
PM me with the address of your GeoCities site and we'll talk (off-line) - we're both currently "disabled"...

You must be in western PA. I'm hoping we get one more good dump of snow this year for my last fix of snowboarding on fresh snow. I sure hate to see the ski season end. Sure wish I had the bucks to travel to Argentina/New Zealand in July for summer snowboarding.
Yep up by Lake Erie, good old lake effect! They boys were out snowboarding yesterday and today. Although the temp went up to 46 so getting pretty wet out there.
Glad I stumbled along this thread using the search field. Now I don't need to post a new topic.
I am also interested in what the OP was referring to and found all the replies very useful.
My question is, I need to find a website service that offers video, audio, and photo hosting.
I need a website that will allow me to have those services. This will be a music artist fansite. I emailed 1and1 and they said that I would need to use their Dedicated Window Server III package. I really don't want to spend $90 a month.
