.

I use WinXP Pro on and AMD computer with cable access.

I just bought a new noteboke computer, and I want
to setup my notebook for remote access, including
the downloading of files from my main computer.

I am retired and not a business person. I would
seldom be using this access.

Can you point me to the best FREE method I can
use to do this with? I don't mind the initial
expense of the software I may have to buy.

I just don't want to pay a monthly fee for something
I would seldom use. Again, I might consider paying a minimal
amount = perhaps a dollar or two a month, depending
on the simplicity and quality of the product.

If you could point me to quality info concerning remote access,
it will be appreciated also.

Thanks for your help

Cajun

Do you really need remote access? Or do you just need a small set of synchronized files when you're remote?

Also, please let us know if you have Win XP Pro or Home? And whether you have a router.

I have WinXP Pro, and I would like to access my main computer
with my laptop, as if I was working on the maim computer itself
if possible.

Is there software available that I can buy to do this, without
paying monthly fees to some company?

Yes I have a cable and a wireless router.

Thanks again

From inside your house you want to use your laptop to run programs on your desktop?

You can easily access any PC with Windows XP Professional by using Remote Desktop (/Start/Programs/Accessories/Communication/Remote Desktop Connection). It's totally free and works great. Once connected, the REMOTE computer's desktop will appear. You are using the laptop, but the screen will look like you are working on your host (desktop) computer.

On the "Host" (your desktop computer), you need to turn on Remote Access (/Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Remote/Remote Desktop (enable "Allow Users to connect remotely to this computer). Once enabled, administrators will be able to connect remotely. If you use a non-Administrator acount, you need to "Select Remote Users..." to give another account remote access.

This service uses TCP Port 3389. If you have a firewall between the remote laptop and the host desktop computer, you need to tell the firewall to allow TCP Port 3389 packets to reach your host. The Windows XP SP2 Firewall has settings for this. If you wish to remotely from the Internet, you will probably need to tell your Firewall/Router to pass requests on Port 3389 to your host computer.

Thanks to all of you for the info.

I want to be able to go to a WIFI area, or my friends house,
and access my main computer at home.

If I use RebateMonger's method, will I be able to do this?

Thank You

From next door you can either chose to join your own WiFi network (assuming an adequate signal strength, or you can probably come in through your Cable Modem/Router, if you open up TCP Port 3389 for incoming packets and direct them to your main desktop computer (it's call Port Address Translation).

Here is a great free remote log in program.
You can mix it with 98 and xp.

Thanks guys for all the help you have given me.

I think I'm gonna settle for LogMeIn for now,
even though I won't be able to transfer files.

Thanks Again
