Done. Just report back on my test with ME-340U2F (09/2005 firmware) + Plextor 716A (1.08 firmware) on Dell 400SC (build-in USB2.0 controller and TI based firewire 1394a PCI controller) Nero reports burst rate 29Mbps on firewire and 24Mbps/s on USB2. No 16X DVDR on hand to test yet. But I am confident this will be far enough for full 16X DVD burn (which requires 23Mbps or higher). Me-340U2F from acortech (PL-3507 based. OEM, not Bytecc) is a cheap but good looking, nicely built, aluminum enclosure and comes with many accessories. I would highly recommend it for all 16X DVDRW users.

Is there a listing of what brands usually run what chipsets?
When shopping for enclosures, they are usually not listed on merchant ads by Acortech or Geeks, etc. |

For compatibility between both operating systems, you should format the drive as FAT32. That will cause the fewest problems. You will need to create 2-partitions of 128GB in 98 (98 can't create larger than that), and you will need to do the formatting in 98 (XP can't create FAT32 partitions larger than 32GB). So, attach it to your desktop and do the whole setup there (2 128GB FAT32 Partitions).
Thanks STB. I've also just found that there are some limitations vs FAT32, so I might just stick with NTFS and the laptop. http://faq.arstechnica.com/link.php?i=1227 |

We are trying to keep such a list in Quick Summary
A brand can use any chipset for different models. A more reliable reference is based on the OEM part number. For example, all ME-320U2F and ME-340U2F should use PL3507, no matter which brand they are being sold as.
Also most vendors will mention OX911 in the description if it is used, maybe because OX911 is quite famous and more expensive than other chipsets

Correct, but the point of FAT32 was because you asked about compatibility between two machines, and Windows 98 doesn't have built-in support for NTFS. The best you can do is read-only access via a third-party driver like this:
NTFS for Win98 |

I looked at most of the threads/posts here. Recently (some other thread) someone posted a link to a really good Enclosure with a fan ---the picture showed a big fan positioned on top of the Hard Drive (horizontally). I have found small fans ineffective by monitoring the temperature of the HD with and without these small fans). I would be greatful if someone can point me in the right direction with the link! TIA! |

How can I verify the chipset of a particular enclosure? I got an used one off eBay, but right now I don't have a drive to test it with. |

You can directly look at the bridge board and locate the chipset (usually the largest chip onboard). You can read the chipset info. If I remeber correctly, you should see something like: PL 3507 (Prolific 3507) OX 911-TQ-A (Oxford 911) ALI ... (Ali)
You can look up at Windows's "safely remove hardware" tray-icon. Usually it will list the name of the bridge chipset.

Thanks for the info. I am bidding on another enclosure off eBay, and the best info the seller can give me is that the enclosure is ME-320F. I searched for that model number and couldn't find any conclusive result on its chipset. Am I out of luck? |

That's a Welland or Bytecc enclosure, and it most likely uses a Prolific chipset. Certain companies always use the same chipset for all their enclosures, so you can tell just by knowing the brand or model number. |

it (OX911) can only support up to 10X DVD burning speed. it does not have the 3.5" to 5.25" rack. thus you can not mount HDD in it unless you have your own racks.
Other than that, it is good.

ME-320F (1394 only) is likely to be OX911 see here ME-320U2F (USB2 and 1394) is PL 3507

I'd really like to see someone who has one verify that the Bytecc has an Oxford chipset. A lot of these cheapo discount sites put misleading and inaccurate information on their web pages which I don't trust until I can verify it from a third-party site or actual person. Most of the cheap enclosure dealers try to hide or lie about chipsets, because they know that most people want Oxford/Initio (Firewire) or Cypress/NEC (USB). |

I have Maxtor OneTouch 200GB external drive with exposure. I was just curious, what is the maximum capacity that specific exposure supports?
Thanks in advance. |

I can confirm that my OEM ME-320F and Bytecc ME-350F version 1 are using OX911 both were like 2-3 years old. Hope they did not change the bridge board recently SickTeddyBear said:kknd1967 said:ME-320F (1394 only) is likely to be OX911 see here ME-320U2F (USB2 and 1394) is PL 3507
