On another note, it seems that sometimes when people notice their computer is slow, it is because the hard drive is running in PIO mode instead of something like DMA mode 5. To check if this might be your problem (on xp), you want to go to device manager, and click IDE controllers, and then click your IDE controller, and the tabs for each channel to see if it is in PIO mode. (To get to device manager, press windows and the pause key (near pg up), then click the hardware tab, and device manager.)
I found it in the second link in the first post. The message is by walterskinner.
I tried several trick from google but could not change it from PIO to DMA (try the ResetCounters in regedit, uninstall the driver and window re-detect it again... ). It always go back to PIO.
My two comps just slow down considerably for the past couple weeks. I thought it was some spyware/virus but after several scan nothing show up. I check the processess: do not see anything suspicious. I got 1G RAM in both machine and they only used 200 M ... After reading the post by walterskinner, I checked my Device Managers and it did said PIO for the secondary IDE. Any help ! |

PC World just ranked pay and free AntiVirus software. You can see the results at http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,124475,00.asp. Of the 3 free AV software they ranked (AntiVir Personal Edition Classic 6.32, Alwil Software Avast Home Edition 4.6 and Grisoft AVG Free Edition 7.1), AntiVir's ranked as the best. Interestingly enough, Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security Security 2006 actually finished below AntiVir's with the same ranking as Avast and it costs $50. I guess the moral is that you don't always get what you pay for.
P.S. BitDefender 9.0 finished on top and costs $30. |

The LAN works juz fine as well as the internet connection sharing..Now i got one pc that connect directly to the internet broadband..a desktop that uses linksys usb wifi adapter, two laptops that has wifi built in..all those can already get the internet connection ...
The main computer uses the Wireless-G ADSL Gateway Linksys..and i've done the setting to allow another computer to connect to internet through this computer...
The problem here is ... I need to secure my internet connection..when i use the setting of ICS all other computer within range can access to my broadband line... so how do secure my connection?? Do i need to use certain firewall or windows already provide the function?? If so could you possibly show me the step by step of how to do it...Thanks in advance... |

On unlocking cell phones if you know what you are doing this is good info but if your a avg. joe just buy a unlocked Quad Band phone it'll pretty much work with every gsm carrier around the world instead of screwing around w/a locked phone and than getting the run around from the manufacturer cuz you screwed up thats if they take up your issue which is possible they will if you pretend like you don't know what happened to the phone lol |

Does anyone know how to stop svchost.exe from sucking up 100% of the CPU on a Win XP machine? I can't do much when 100% of the CPU is going to service this stupid program. I'm running Win XP Home, Service Pack 2. |

With help from this post, it appears I was able to get rid of some nasty stuff. But I had to use a USB drive to run software for diagnosing it. Now I'm afraid to plug that drive into anything else. If I plug it into a PC that's at the dump (they have piles of old ones that are destined for recycling) and click on start > explore and choose the drive by letter and then format from the pull down menu will any chance of anything bad on the USB drive be gone or do I need something more than just format to be assured of a totally clean drive? Or should I just leave the USB drive at the dump? |

Or should I just leave the USB drive at the dump?Yes, something could be left after that. If you wipe the partition though and then format it, it will be clean. Right click My Computer, Manage, Disk Manager then right click the drive letter in question and remove the partition. You can then create a new one and format it. Also, this isn't the place to post questions - this is a guide. Next time add a new post and you will get a fast response. |
