As per the PC Mag article... Every time you plug a USB key into someone else's computer, you risk catching a virus or other malware. For a scanner that checks the full range of viruses found in the wild, download AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic, which can be installed to your USB drive and run from any host computer. (It puts a few Registry entries on your hard drive, which you can remove or ignore.) One minor problem with AntiVir on a USB drive: If you haven't used the drive for a day or two, you should run the AntiVir updater as soon as you plug your drive into a new machine. But after you run the built-in updater, the updater component remains in memory, so the Safely Remove Hardware icon will tell you that you can't remove your USB drive safely. You can use the Windows Task Manager to close down the AntiVir process before removing the drive, or simply pull the drive out without further ado if you're certain that no other program on it is still running.

Seems like the portable piece is new for the latest version. Only thing is you have to install it to your PC. Then you go to "Settings" and click a button to create a portable version. It writes all the necessary stuff to a folder. Too bad they don't also offer a downloadable version that you wouldn't have to install first. Seems they could.
It's a nice little app. It's rather unique in it's design and functionality. I find it rather useful for certain ways of dealing with pics.
Ztree is a really awesome file manager, it's exactly like the old old dos Xtree program, except, Xtree stopped being improved many years ago, and the Ztree has many improvements.
From PortableFreeware:Private Disk Light creates one or more virtual encrypted drive for you to store documents or applications away from prying eyes. Each virtual drive is mapped to an actual file on your physical disk. Data written to it are automatically encrypted using AES with a master password that you provide. It is great for keeping data on portable storage devices secure so that sensitive information is not compromised when the device is misplaced or lost.
How to install: Download the installer and install to the default folder C:\\Program Files\\Dekart\\Private Disk Light. Then copy all files into a folder of your choice. In addition, you also need to copy C:\\Windows\\System32\\dkar.dll (to the folder on your USB drive). Finally, uninstall the program. Launch the program by double-clicking on PrvDiskLight.exe.
What's the advantage of PDL compared to using dsCrypt? With dsCrypt, you have to encrypt/decrypt each file individually. PDL shows up as another drive in Windows Explorer where you can simply drag and drop multiple files. The filenames themselves aren't even visible until you "connect" to the encrypted drive.
PDL (and TrueCrypt) are ideal for USB flash drives that do not include security software, such as USB drives by PNY. The app's file size (500Kb) is also much smaller than many included security softwares. Compare that to Sandisk's CruzerLock2 which is 4MB!
As with any portable app, please remember to exit from PDL before removing your USB drive to prevent data corruption and premature damage to your USB drive. PDL shows as a green or red dot next to the clock. The hotkey to close PDL is Ctrl+Alt+F12.
How to create a batch file to start a Program Launcher (i.e., PStart): - Open Notepad and copy & paste the following: @echo off echo Starting PStart... cd\\ start PCApps\\PStart\\PStart.exe - Change 'PCApps\\PStart\\PStart.exe' to the actual location of the file on your USB drive - Note that folder names must not contain spaces! - In Notepad, click File > Save As > Save in: [Choose the root directory of your USB drive] > Save as type: All Files > File name: PStart.bat

This batch file works like a shortcut. Since the drive letter may change whenever you plug your USB drive into a different PC, creating a simple shortcut does not work. This is the workaround.
You can create relative short cuts. Also, if you're just working around the autoplay with an easy way to start PStart, I think the shell command trick I posted: [autorun] icon=\\win32\\PStart\\PStart.exe shell\\PStart = PStart shell\\PStart\\command = win32\\PStart\\PStart.exe

I've been using this client and lemme tell you guys something...if you use this with your flash drive, you can easily use high speed public computers to download torrents without anybody really knowing...so yes, there is a seedy purpose for using this, especially on school computers and such, but I've tried it and it works better than I thought it would, so just adding this gem to the list.

Not necessarily. Most applications write settings to the registry and application folder on the local PC during installation. Many applications depend on platform runtimes such as VB, .Net, and Java which may not be installed on other machines. Some of these applications may also install specific .DLL files in the local PCs Windows directory which will not be available unless it has been installed on all PCs you run the app on. If an app requires these to run, it does not make it truly portable.

But I am wondering if there's a portable version where you can travel with just a USB drive but yet still be able to connect to company's internal network via VPN from any computer in the world connected to the internet.

Otherwise, a portable VPN would require at least a virtual machine, if not actually be a bootable OS. Both of these options are out there (to run Linux (which you can install VPN software for) on any PC).
As quoted by a user here: 7zip can be made portable thats how i use it just install it on the usb drive instead of the hard drive and use the 7zFM.exe instead of the 7z.exe when you run it. Should work fine it does for me. 7-Zip
Can you make the drive like a bootable Window xp installer? so instead of carrying the cd around, i can just hook this baby up and reboot to new copy of window?
