I recently got the 512mb drive from the CC deal and I've tried to unzip the All-In-One collection as mentioned in the quick summary, but it doesn't seem to fit. I've even tried removing the games, but there is still not enough room. Each time, I deleted all the files on the drive. I was wondering if anyone has the same problem and if anyone has any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

so, w/ somehting like the sandisc 512mb micro, do u just attach it to keychain? is there some type of lock/snapon device where it'd be easier to remove it from key then to turn it 360o through the keyring to get it out? also, is there some sort of reminder program to remind u to take remove the key after a certain amount of minutes? the programs listed here seem like they could be any program that fits in usb drive, not necessary optimized for thumb drives.

No, most programs if you install on one machine then take the drive to another machine, they won't work because of all the registry settings and other items put into the Windows directories.

And CamStudio seems to work and keep everything in its own directory. Great capturing program, turn off screen overlays under performance:advanced in WMP to capture from it, overlays give a blank screen for capture programs. Also find version 2.0, it was bought out and version 2.1 had stuff removed and adds put in etc..

OP please add

mytiddlywiki

http://www.tiddlywiki.com/

TiddlyWiki has almost limitless possibilities:

* It works great as a documentation manager for products, software, etc.
* Do you have a desktop full of tiny .txt file reminders and notes? It can store little bits of information, reminders, and notes like that with ease.
* It makes a great FAQ page.
* Turn it into a todo list, with items as tiddlers.
* Some use it as a blog.
* Some use it as a website.
* Make it your own personal dictionary/encyclopedia.

i found it extremely useful as i do this

"Do you have a desktop full of tiny .txt file reminders and notes? It can store little bits of information, reminders, and notes like that with ease"

Its just a single Html File. I store my references i find while browsing on my machine or in school. Other stuff i store includes suggestions reg work, planning,Schedules, article abstracts...possibilities r limitless

IMHO it beats all Schedulers and other planning things

It has an options feature where u can tweak how it saves stuff. did i mention it comes with autosave?

I have a Kingston 256mb and a Sandisk 512mb.

The Travelersafe on Kongston is easy to use and can be used anywhere.

The sfotware on Sandisk is not very userfriendly. So I deleted the software, and installed PDL (and later TrueCrypt) at home and failed to start the program at work. "You do not have the administrative right to run the program".

Any thoughts? Thanks for help!

Are there any spyware/adware scanning applications that will run independently on a USB drive?

Actually, I'm interested in setting up a CD/USB drive that will run a series of independent applications to clean up an infected PC (virus/worm/trojan/spyware/adware) without any user intervention and if possible without installing any software on the infected machine. I've cleaned up a few PC's for friends and neighbors and it very time consuming, plus each application has to be installed and updated via an internet connection on each PC. I'd like to store updated copies of freeware applications on a drive that will boot up and run each one, one at a time, sequentially. Anyone know of anything that already exists?

The software I usually use to clean up PC's is AVG, Spybot, Adaware, CW Shredder, About Buster. I use others as well if the infection is really bad, but the five I mentioned are usually enough.

Usually you want to install those apps anyway (so that they can either run in the background to keep cruft off the machine or be manually run at a later date to take off any cruft that has accumulated since the last cleaning).

Consider trying to use AutoHotkey to install all the apps, configure them, and run them.

I agree you would usually want to install them for future use, however I have cleaned some seriously infected machines that I did not want to connect to my network or the internet to get pattern updates so I could avoid cross contamination or having the infected machine send spam or viruses via a built-in engine over my high speed internet connection and risk a service disconnection or getting blamed for it myself.

I'll take a look at the application you suggested, but I really want a USB drive or CDR full of independent programs. Being bootable would be nice but it's not necessary since I can boot up into safe mode on any machine and still run from the CDR or USB drive.

titewad said: I agree you would usually want to install them for future use, however I have cleaned some seriously infected machines that I did not want to connect to my networkMy proposal was really to have AutoHotkey + the installation files and updates on your CDR (or memory stick), so this is not really an issue. Due note that if you distrust the machine so much that you wouldn't put it on the internet, I would also distrust it with writable media (unless you've booted to it). Note that re. bootable, some anti-spyware software does a better job of scanning the current OS (particularly for things which rely on the registry) than any non-booted copies. But, of course, some anti-viral software should often be booted, to avoid anti-antivirus tactics or to handle win32's poor file locking.

I doubt any bootable CD of self-running cruft-removal exists: most, although gratis, don't come with permissive licenses which allow for modification and/or redistribution.

Windows XP on a thumb drive? Just had to try that, so I followed the instructions from "Windows In Your Pocket."

And y'know what? It actually works. <VBG>

I use a UBCD for Windows (Ultimate Boot CD) on a CD-RW for those type of situations. I don't have it on a USB flash drive because older PCs don't recognize bootable USB drives.

I believe Spybot Search and Destroy can be ran directly from the flash drive. also so can Adaware SE, as I just copied the C:\\program files folders to a place on the flash card, uninstalled both via the uninstaller and so far both run just fine.. someone can test this out to and confirm it if they like..

Anyone know if there is a DVD software decoder that I can run off a flash drive? My office did not install the decoder and I would like to be able to watch DVD's on my computer.

I couldn't get the autofill plugin for firefox to remember my info, but I found this great site for autofilling webforms. I even tried google toolbar, but it only allows for one profile. This one allows as many as you like. It's not perfect, but it does what I need.

Have you tried VLC Media Player? It supports viewing DVDs.

Anyone know of a portable App to edit MP3 tags?

Try Mp3 Tag Tools. It is portable according to PortableFreeware.com.

Let me know how it works out and I'll add it to the list!

Added Skype

Download the installer and install to the default folder C:\\Program Files\\Skype\\Phone. Then copy Skype.exe to a folder of your choice. Finally, uninstall the program. Create a subfolder called Data. Then launch the program by using:

Skype.exe /datapath:"Data" /removable

Requires 18MB of memory.

Source: PortableFreeware.com

UPDATE 1: Use PStart to launch Skype with the datapath parameter. Screenshot coming soon.

UPDATE 2: Or create a batch file called Skype.bat in Notepad with the following to simplify launching the app:
@echo off
start \\Skype\\Skype.exe /datapath:"\\Skype\\Data" /removable

- Change '\\Skype\\Skype.exe' to the actual location of the file on your USB drive
- Note that folder names must not contain spaces!
- In Notepad, click File > Save As > Save in: [Choose a location on your USB drive] > Save as type: All Files > File name: PStart.bat

Done!

This batch file works like a shortcut. Since the drive letter may change whenever you plug your USB drive into a different PC, creating a simple shortcut does not work. This is the workaround.

windows media player 7 I believe is also portable, it is installed on 98 I just went to C:\\program files\\windows media player and *but first unhide hidden files* copied all to my usb flash drive and deleted the folder and it runs fine (actually a bit quicker than when run from my computer), however I would advise to go to the MS website and download the media player 9 codecs first (I had to due to the fact IT wouldn't autoinstall and said the certificate wasn't signed correctly or something, however a quick download from the MS website helped, U have to get the 9th version codecs for this version only tho, they list the version.. now when I try and run it from the shortcut from the startmenu which is deleted after this post I posted,it says it cannot find it, as in it starts to autofind...

I'm pretty certain that WMP writes to the registry which makes it non-portable.

This is one of the most helpful threads in the Computers forum. Having your data on a USB Stick is very useful. Just make sure to practice safe security. I would also add some encryption of the drive/app/data if possible.

This is made by the EFF (one great foundation if I may say so). It will encrypt your information and send it through a proxy that is chained through other peoples computers or nodes. This will really boost your security, but do note that of course, it's not 100% fool proof, and you should not use it for absolute anonymity. You should probably also use the extension switchproxy for this program to make configuring it with firefox a bit easier.

dumpav said: regarding "window in your pocket"

Can you make the drive like a bootable Window xp installer? so instead of carrying the cd around, i can just hook this baby up and reboot to new copy of window?

I want to do this too. I followed window in your pocket directions and got it working, but it's a stripped down version of XP like it said. Is there any way to boot into a full blown XP pro from it? I tried installing to it but XP won't recognize the drive under set up. I tried imaging from an existing install then booting from the usb (this time an external laptop HD on an USB converter) but I just get a blinking cursor. Has anyone had success with intalling a full blown XP onto a usb flash drive (or laptop drive in enclsoure, usb micro drive etc) and boot from it?

OMG it works! Hahaha...that's awesome. So you can take your Windows with you wherever you go, store downloads, and sync @your house/office. It works, I printed the pages out & followed the steps with XP Home. I wonder about XP Corporate. Did this on a 2GB Sandisk flashdrive.

It didn't work for me. After selecting the flash drive to install to, it complained of not being able to access the drive. What version of XP did you use? What laptop?
I was missing this line:
"usbehci = usbehci.sys"
in all of my inf files from my XP pro. (no sp1 or sp2)
