Have you called MS to get reactivated?
I am not up on what is currently the most user-friendly flavor of Linux, but at last look about a year ago, Mandrake was pretty impressive.
Lindows was not bad either, although I have not heard much about that OS lately...

Call MS and a CSR will give you a 50 digit number to reactivate. I would suggest that once you get the basic installation done to use a disk imaging program like Ghost or Acronis to make a copy. All you have to do then is restore the image and you're ready to go. If you want an easy introduction to Linux look at SUSE or Xandros for commercial releases with support. As for free Linux, any five users will have five opinions. You might want to try Knoppix first. It will boot from a CD and give you an idea of what the Linux world is about. I no longer run Linux on a home computer since buying a Mac this year. Keeping three OSes up and running is to much of a brain strain for me now.

Is this a RETAIL cd? You should be able to activate every 120 days, even on different hardware, without penalty.
I also second the notion of using Ghost to image your drive after getting XP installed perfectly. You'll never, ever need to spend 18 hours reinstalling windows, and downloading 18 GB of patches and updates...
The $4 I spent on Ghost was my best investment, ever.
