May be this belong to free stuff section. Here is it anyway.

Link

Linspire has released a Linux distribution called Freespire.

This is perhaps first, most complete, Linux distribution with out of the box support for mp3, windows media, quick time, real, java, flash,DVD, ATI, Nvidia drives etc.

This has licensed media codecs.

There was story on slashdot too about it

Wow! Linux for free!

Who would have ever thought that would have happened....

It's the "community and developer edition of the Linspire operating system."

A beta version, in other words.

I got couple of their earlier versions. Free.
4.5 annd 5.0. It was fun usig that. however many of the avi files did not play. they ask you to pay to use the CNR service. but that is good no need to compile install??

isn't that essentially what all linux distros are?

Would you pay for a beta? I don't think Redhat Linux sold for use in production environments is considered beta by Redhat, but the Fedora developer version you can d/l for free is a beta, according to RH. They put it out there so the bugs can be worked out.

it's probably just terminology but I would say that every linux distro, by definition, is at least a community edition - they're not writing their own kernel.

I would like to mention here that I have Linspire on which Freespire is based. I tested it with a few different computers and uncovered a few gotchas and glitches which I expect apply to Freespire as well. Linspire failed to install on a couple of laptops, presumably because it did not support the hardware. On those systems where it did install, it was not quite stable. Some applications crashed on me forcing me to reboot. The install program does not have any option to partition your drive. It insists on installing to an already created partition or an entire drive. Moreover, you cannot specify mount points for existing partitions at install time; you have to do this using some utility which I wasn't quite able to figure out. Also, there is no (or at least, was not when I tried) support for dual core systems or 64 bit systems.

thanks for the info.
linspire for picky about graphics card, I think.
I did not have prob. with my earlier linspire 4.5 0r 5.0.
when I wanted to remove that, I reformatted my disc. that was my way of doing things.
