Review of MIO C310

Hack your c310x to have full access to Windows CE - Including MP4 Movie Playback, Winamp, and MS ActiveSync - compliments of stroths
1. Instructions - The directions are for the 510/710, but it works just the same on the 310 providing you use the CD method rather than the bluetooth (310 has no bluetooth)
2. Download Unlock-C510-Mioskins.zip

Here are some screenshots from my modded c310x
- MP4 Video Playback via TCPMP (It does full screen as well)
- Start Menu - You can start the default MP3 player, the Mapping software as well as other apps here
- System Info App
- Windows CE .Net 4.2 Desktop - This is what it boots to after the mod

EDIT: Download TCPMP .81 Beta RC1 - This is the last version before they started charging. The AAC plugin is included. This will run along side .72 and previous versions. If you don't want both, you will have to uninstall the old version as this installs in a new directory.

How to add a voice language using MioTransfer Hack.

1. Download Mio Transfer Hack.
2. Unzip the only file, "Mio Transfer Hack.exe" to your MioDigiWalker program directory.
3. Backup the current "Mio Transfer.exe" in a different folder.
4. Rename "Mio Transfer Hack.exe" to "Mio Transfer.exe". You don't need the quotations.
5. Open "Mio Transfer.exe" and it'll be a different interface from the one you installed on the disk. Don't unzip it.
6. Download the Language Pack you want here to your desktop.
7. Go back to Mio Transfer and click on the Flash icon and it should show you all the folders in your GPS.
8. Navigate to \\My Flash Disk\\MioMap\\MioMap\\voice\\ and transfer the language file in it's .zip format.

With this method, you don't have to unlock your MIO to add a language voice. Hope this helps. Credit goes stroths for all the information posted by him.

Please edit if there are errors.

POI EDITOR

1) Copy IGO.DB from PocketPC to PC.

With PoiEdit create from POI-file a IGO.KML file.

2) convert POIs
with tool poiconvert.exe you can import in the DOS-Box POIs with KML- Format into IGO.DB:

Usage: poiconvert.exe [d|e|t]

d: decode iGO.db file into iGO.kml
e: encode iGO.kml into exising iGO.db
t: export tracks from iGO.db to iGO.gpx

Attention:
Encode delete from iGO.db file the former POI's, and only POI's from iGO.kml will come into the new iGO.db file.

poiconvert.exe (http://www.pocketnavigation.de/board/attachment.php?attachmentid=1009909)

3) copy back igo.db

See this link, but it's in german...
http://www.xda-zone.de/thread.php?id=10622&start=46&seuser=&sepost=POI%20IGo%20Konvertieren#52

------

Alternate Method (easier) would be to follow the instructions on the MIO Wiki using iGOPOIExplorerBeta (look for "Easy POI Editor").

There are many POI's Over at the GPSPassion Forums. Just be careful not to go crazy with the POI's cause they do slow it down (only in loading up MIOMap and searching POI's).

FREE APPS

You can get a free Image Viewer, Resource Meter, Pocket Paint, and Squares (game) with some other less useful stuff - download from Microsoft below. Just Run the installer and when you synch it up (with activesync) it will prompt you to install the apps (you don't need to install them all). I would suggest installing them on your SD card unless you have the 2 GB version.

Plus! Pack for Windows CE Handheld PC Pro Edition Version 3.0

Let me be the first to ask, with all the mods available, will you be able to do Text to Speech?

How about running another mapping software on top of that ?

alert mods

I run TomTom Navigator 6 on mine. It sucks, because the maps suck. They're TeleAtlas, just like the Mio.

I think the Mio software is incredible..

And I don't think there is a text-to-speech available for the Mio software.

What other good GPS software packages do we have available? I have the Mio, TomTom Navigator 6, and iGuidance.

alert mods

New to GPS units, what is voice language?

alert mods

I think the unit kinda sucks to be honest. I tested it out and its nowhere near as good as a stock car GPS system. The mapping / routing software is pretty bad. Its probably worth $150-$200 though but you really should be careful about following its instructions. You might end up going the wrong way down a one way street.

I am kind of new to GPS and since MIO was a hot deal for BF, I bought it. I have couple of questions related to the it's MAP.

1. There are lot of complaints related to TeleAtlas. Can we change this? And how?
2. There are links provided above to unlock the mio. Why do we need this, and what are the advantages?
3. Also I heard that MIO is not doing re-rout if you miss the exit, it will force you to make a U-turn and take that rout. Is there anyway we can get re-rout facility?

Please help me for these questions.

1. Don't know. I'm also new to GPS. Mio is my first unit. I guess it's up to the software to read other type of maps.
2. You unlock to customize it, for example of what was listed above: play back music and videos, having access to Windows CE, almost pretty much a PDA thing.
3. That's true. I tried it last night on my trip way home. It kept telling me to turn back repeatedly. However, as I keep driving on my known route, it started to recalculate to get back on the main traveling route it calculated.

alert mods

As far as re-route goes, it does in fact want you to u-turn for a while, but after a few miles, will re-route you. you can always do a manual re-route if you need. I did have to use a "detour" on the way home last night in bumper to bumper, stop and go traffic on i-95, and it worked great with a 20 mile detour.

i do like this better than the magellen 760 i have that i paid 3 times as much for.

Mio is Back in CC Now.

you can turn off the u-turns, it will then use left-turns (3) to recommend getting back on track.

the unit can use maps from all over the world but they are Elite Warez kinda dealio.

tmpgnc works great plays perfect videos in mpg/avi/whatever
winampq works great, looks like winamp and works the same.
alot of small applets that are ARM (CE3) style work fine.
Activesync 4.2 works perfectly for usb file management.

I'm guessing (not legally) you can get updated map software working on this. not the right forum to discuss. It's basically an older pocketpc pda (without any phone).

you can buy pocketpc TOMTOM for like $250 but that kinda defeats the cheapness eh?

How are people doing with the mount for this thing? The suction cup on mine has a tendency to lose grip all of a sudden, with no rhyme or reason to how frequently. Sometimes it will do it twice in five minutes, other times it will survive two consecutive thirty minute trips. Its not the force of the driving, because I can tear around one corner and have it hold on tight, but then other times just give it a little gas in top gear on the highway and have the thing land on the floor.

alert mods

i was going to use the useless cupholder in the dash myself. its not good for liquids so might as well fit it there, lol. looks like it almost could fit the audi's credit card holder or you could go super ghetto and velcro it to your dash.

my kid watches the baby einstein videos and i got a bunch of cool mp3's so i want to make it do many tasks in front and back seat. Gotta get a VESA mount for a graco travel system so she can get the adjustable arm position viewing lol.

if i can hack it to output video i could hookup a 15" on her graco travel system and some spinners and it would be allll-right.

After you mount it, give it a firm tug. Maybe that'll prevent it..

Regarding to TeleAtlas maps: TeleAtlas just released their updated map database in October! According to Mio, they will have the updated maps available for download next year, so hopefully people will stop bashing TeleAtlas!

alert mods

I've been using this pretty heavinly since picking it up on Friday - in terms of the re-routing, mine has only "forced" a U-turn once, and that was when I missed a highway entrance that wouldn't return for ~20 miles. Every other time I missed a turn (sometimes intentionally), it automatically recalculated and never "suggested" pulling a Uie.

alert mods

dude disable u-turns in settings.

anyways you guys notice the 710x is the same thing?? someone open theirs up.

I bet you could probably run 710x firmware on this.

alert mods

On the u-turn thing, just reprogram the destination.

Clearing the current trip is quick, easy and has worked for me.

alert mods

Some questions to Mio owners:

1. Does the map move as you are driving? I saw some reviews of a GPS where it only shows destination map.
2. If you are listening to MP3 while driving, does it mute the mp3 to give voice direction and then resume playing mp3 or its either/or?

Thanks!!

alert mods

You can lock the unit on a certain zoom level and location, otherwise it will follow you and zoom dynamically depending on how fast you are going and how close to the next turn you are. You can also choose between 3D and birdseye view of the map (I prefer the latter), as well as north up or track up.
