I've always seen Webroot SpySweeper as the #1 or #2 rated product in recent years. Spyware Doctor is rated #1 this year, if I'm not mistaken...but it may be a little more expensive than the $15 you mention - ???

EDIT: Looks like the people that make Spyware Doctor are now offering a FREE antivirus solution for download. Anyone tried this yet? Care to give a review??? LINK!

Depends on the review of course, but download.com is giving CounterSpy 5 stars while SpySweeper is only getting 3. I like CounterSpy quite a bit, and it's only $20 for the first year,$10 per year after that.

Oh, and the 15 day trial is fully functional, unlike some trials out there that will not clean anything.

I've had a few machines come in with PC Tools AV on them. They were here because they were infected with viruses, so I don't think much of it.

What about Hirem's Boot CD. It's got tons of utilities on it.

And (I believe) it is completely and utterly illegal.

Yeah, last time I looked at a list of what was on that, it had a bunch of applications that were not free. Maybe it's changed...

Nope it's still illegal as of when I looked today.

I love using Ztree (ztree.com) for file moving/copying/managing.
It is a windows clone of the very old dos Xtree from the old days, which eventually led to the evolution of windows explorer.

I'm downloading it as I type this, so I haven't actually tried it yet...but this free program (a liveCD), CloneGenius looks like an excellent alternative to Ghost, offering drive to drive, drive to image, partition to image, and partition to partition imaging...

Found another tool to add to my list of useful utilities:

"SoftX Internet Logger 1.2" found here.

This Internet Logger records ALL incoming/outgoing traffic on an installed PC, and saves a logfile of all traffic BY APPLICATION.

The obvious uses, at least that I see, are: Being able to recover passwords that are saved by applications, but your client can't remember the password on their own (they are plaintext in the logfile), AND, it looks like a useful tool for scanning thru the logfile to see if any spyware items are phoning home (shows ALL URLs browsers are connecting to, and what HTML is flying back and forth.

The icon shows in the system tray at all times, so it's probably not a useful monitoring tool (for parents, etc)

I've found another handy tool - Windows Updates Downloader. This lets you download (pretty much) all available updates for easy integration with nLite and other unattended Windows discs. It's much quicker and easier than trying to find and download all updates on your own.
