I'm hijacking my own post, to make this a thread of OpenSource Firmware choices - essentially getting your hardware device to do things the original manufacturer never intended.

Please update the QuickPost as you add your choices

======================================
Original Post:I know I'm in the slow group, but I've now taken the opensource firmware plunge

In the last week I Tomato'ed my Buffalo router (The impetus was that my WET-54G Ethernet bridge died). Although still under warranty (RMA in progress), I needed to get the network up and running.

And, yesterday I RockBox'ed my Sansa.

Overall, I'm very happy with the OpenSource capabilities. Why did I wait so long? Simply fear of bricking my hardware.

Just curious who else has been using opensource and what else is out there.

Router Firmware
dd-wrt
Tomato
openwrt

mp3 players
Rockbox

Cameras
OpenSource Firmware for Canon Cameras

Cellphones
BitPim - enables manipulation of cell phone data. Place your own ringtones, backup and restore phone books, calendars, etc

GPS
none yet

Video players
Enable your DVD player to be Region Free

I've been using Rockbox for many years, first on my old Archos 5 GB Player ( which looked like a brick), then the succeeding Archos recorder ( a somewhat smaller brick) and now my Sansas. I've never had a problem with Rockbox. Haven't come across any other opensource firmwares for other devices I use but also would be interested in others feed back as well.

I would love to rockbox my Sansa c240.. but it doesn't work with the mp3 player/alarm clock/docking station I got it with.

Maddiebeagle is responsible for introducing me to open source on a wrt54g router years ago. Bricking something is still one of greatest fears, however.

I installed boxee on our AppleTV last year (ok, so it's not a firmware upgrade but pretty damn close with what can go wrong). We also unlocked dd's 1st gen iPhone she inherited from her dad.

Buffalo OEM firmware is supposed to be relatively good firmware, as compared to Linksys...

As for Tomato, Tomato is a kiss.

I've done OpenWRT and DD-WRT on several routers, not had any issues so far.

Got DD-WRT on my Asus router. It was very easy to do, and the router works great.

While not technically firmware, BitPim is "close" It enables you to manipulate the data stored in select cell phone models

I love DD-WRT it is rock solid stable when I have used it. I have a WRT54GS v.2 running now for almost 2 years with no reboot needed. That is love.

Some Canon Point and Shoot cameras can run an open source firmware over the top of the normal firmware (it doesn't change anything but adds extra options like RAW mode shooting etc.)

I am beginning to think of entering the GPS age.

Has anyone found /used OpenSource GPS software? If so, what software? What did you think? And on what devices?

Mio DigiWalker C320x GPS Discussion Thread - More of a 'Wrapper' / 'Menu System' as it allows existing software not originally available on the C320 to be loaded and run.

ellory said:I am beginning to think of entering the GPS age...IMO, the BIG boat with Mio C320 deals pulled out last summer, but I did see a small skiff within the last month or so. Unfortunately, I didn't pay much attention to the 'where'.

For 'up-to-date' Mio info, start here: GPS Passion Forum - Mio AIO. If there's not a current HOT Mio deal, look into other forums / brands there.

Probably was here, Mio C320 GPS for $89.95 starting 03/07 at 6ave, for the President's Day Sale...

You could hit the 6th Ave B&M on Rt 1 (Woodbridge?), then the WalMart just up the road in Linden.

A great idea. The maps however are from 2006. And they are no longer supporting their offer to provide new purchasers a free upgrade to the latest maps
