I'm hijacking my own post, to make this a thread of OpenSource Firmware choices - essentially getting your hardware device to do things the original manufacturer never intended.
Please update the QuickPost as you add your choices
====================================== Original Post:I know I'm in the slow group, but I've now taken the opensource firmware plunge
In the last week I Tomato'ed my Buffalo router (The impetus was that my WET-54G Ethernet bridge died). Although still under warranty (RMA in progress), I needed to get the network up and running.
And, yesterday I RockBox'ed my Sansa.
Overall, I'm very happy with the OpenSource capabilities. Why did I wait so long? Simply fear of bricking my hardware.
Just curious who else has been using opensource and what else is out there.
I've been using Rockbox for many years, first on my old Archos 5 GB Player ( which looked like a brick), then the succeeding Archos recorder ( a somewhat smaller brick) and now my Sansas. I've never had a problem with Rockbox. Haven't come across any other opensource firmwares for other devices I use but also would be interested in others feed back as well.
Maddiebeagle is responsible for introducing me to open source on a wrt54g router years ago. Bricking something is still one of greatest fears, however.
I installed boxee on our AppleTV last year (ok, so it's not a firmware upgrade but pretty damn close with what can go wrong). We also unlocked dd's 1st gen iPhone she inherited from her dad.

I love DD-WRT it is rock solid stable when I have used it. I have a WRT54GS v.2 running now for almost 2 years with no reboot needed. That is love.
Some Canon Point and Shoot cameras can run an open source firmware over the top of the normal firmware (it doesn't change anything but adds extra options like RAW mode shooting etc.)

For 'up-to-date' Mio info, start here: GPS Passion Forum - Mio AIO. If there's not a current HOT Mio deal, look into other forums / brands there.

You could hit the 6th Ave B&M on Rt 1 (Woodbridge?), then the WalMart just up the road in Linden.

You could hit the 6th Ave B&M on Rt 1 (Woodbridge?), then the WalMart just up the road in Linden. A great idea. The maps however are from 2006. And they are no longer supporting their offer to provide new purchasers a free upgrade to the latest maps
