was thinking of either buying a NAS already build system at least 4x1TB of space in either RAID 1 or RAID 5.. however im thinking with the prices of cpu/mb/mem nowadays.. i could prob build one better then already built system.. maybe even use a smaller intel atom board..

any thoughts.. comments.. suggestions.. greatly appreciated..

pros/cons

Software, FreeNas.org.

Computer, whatever you want.
Cost ? Hmm.. with Raid? Probably about $700 with monitor for a safe stable system.

well i use a kvm.. so all i would need to build would be the box.. so i was thinking building a small AMD setup.. would on board RAID setup be fine or would i need to get an additional PCI RAID card..

Raid is raid, you don't need anything fancy for a NAS.

Well, that depends on what you want for speed and reliability. Most motherboard RAID systems are slower and less reliable than add on cards. If you aren't looking for major throughput though and only plan to set the RAID up and let it sit (not monitor it) you should be fine with onboard. I have used many different onboard systems and they certainly work. For something serious (like a server) though I always for an add on card so I can get decent monitoring software and faster data transfer.

Motherboard-based RAID is almost always software RAID. That means the CPU is responsible, not a good idea if the CPU is needed for other things (Apps, web server, etc). A dedicated RAID card will provide much better performance and keep most of the effort off the CPU. With 4 drives you typically want to use RAID 5, which protects you from a single disk failure at the cost of 1 drive worth of storage (eg with 4 1TB drives you'll get 3TB of storage). For more info on RAID Wiki has a great article. If you just want something simple that works, check out Drobo.
