Hi IAN..
Performance depends upon ur need. I am using Netgear WPN824 Router 802.11g RangeMax MIMO Wireless G Acces Point since last month. And I must tell you it can give u best performance in any of your needs.
And one of my friend is using Linksys Router Wireless N Wi-Fi 802.11g MIMO RangePlus Smart Antenna. It can catch even faint signals. Both are easy to use and install,Great for wireless printing and sharing files,Data speed of up to 108 Mbps.
BOTH ARE SECURE AND SIMPLE. I am sure you can find them best for ur need. Both are purchased at very cheaper rate than market price from sizzletwist.com
You need to define what "optimum performance" is. Is your main concern fast connections, reliable throughput, wireless range, good interference performance, etc.? There aren't too many devices that are going to give you everything, and those that will won't be cheap. Please redefine your needs and we can offer specific suggestions.
router matters but also wireless adapter on your computer matters too

hey guys I am new with the wireless router, I have comcast internet 6-12mpbs of speed. Hopefully I wrote it ok. Anyways I need to know which router or lynsis model should I need. I have a ps3 & xbox that I play online plus my desktop computer. I am going to get a laptop later but I need to know which one would you guys recommend. Hopefully my internet speed is enough, but I need to get a wireless router quick cause I need to play call of duty 2 modern warfare Please help me choose and be easy on my pockets too. Thank you.>>>>>>
This is 2009 not 1995. Any wireless router off the shelf is fine for 90% of the people.
Would differ if you need one for extra long range (half a mile) or super fast transfer speed or connect more than 255 devices at the same time.

Pickup the Netgear WNDR3700 with 680MHz NPU and 64MB of RAM. Offers Gig controller and USB Storage. Best one would be DIR-685, own GB HDD Storage Controller Chips runs at 300MHz so it doesn't slow down NPU performance. Through-up is much greater on this hardware though. Not dual band like the WNDR3700 though.

Well you do have USB port on the back but you know these routers just can't cut the mustard with USB port. I own two Belkin N+ Hardware V1 (266MHz/32MB of RAM (802.11n is very strong) Gig, USB storage port works when it does, I use it with WD Passport and it shows up in the network places as NAS drive. Best you get wireless or wired LAN USB print server instead very easy to set those up I have 4 of them here.
