So I had this problem last year and updating my software and drivers seemed to to not fix the problem. Then I bought a usb adapter, which was dropped in water (12 month old got it woops). I went back to using this intel adapter about 6 months ago after new drivers came out and I updated to them and it worked.
Over the last month here at work I seem to have had a deteriorating connection. First I started getting dns connection errors for certain sites, especially facebook. Then, about 2 weeks ago, I started to get disconnections. The laptop stays connected to the network for variable amounts of time and then all of a sudden I get a message "you have been disconnected from xxx." The connection shows yellow for the wireless signal and the connection is shown as disconnected in network connections, of course. Very rarely the adapter becomes disabled on its own. I have contacted the IT department and they say that the routers are all working well and that it is a problem on my end, which I suspected. I right click the connection and then repair it.
I also have:
1. updated using the driver/wireless program that is the most recent update. This has not solved the issue. I plan on redoing this tonight again.
2. uninstalled the adapter, reinstalled the adapter and then updating the driver and program as above
3. allowed windows to run the connection
Also of note the intel driver/adapter detection utility does not detect the adapter

The interesting tidbit in all of this, which is why it has taken me a while to seek help, is that I have NO problems at home at all. I had some time off and updated the drivers, etc. and then got busy with other things at work. A solution that has occurred to me is just buying a usb adapter.
Also of note is that I am out of warranty for Dell.

any help would be appreciated and I hope that I gave the information needed.
thanks

EDIT:
I forgot to mention that if I go to Dell.com to update my driver, as suggested by intel, they have a far older software/driver on their site. (11/4/08 compared to the newest set at intel from 6/29/09)

Did you try wireless at home and try to run a youtube and see if it drops?

If so , it's your adapter

If not, then honestly IT is giving you the brush off.

If there are no problems at all at home, doing the same kind of things you are doing at work, it doesn't seem too likely that the issue is a bad piece of hardware. It could be that there is an incompatibility between your adapter and the work router though. In that case the USB solution makes perfect sense. And you could keep the USB adapter at work, just for use at work, to avoid its water based destruction again. Why take it home if you don't need it there?

thank you both

I have no problems at home with video of any kind. I will double check youtube again when I get home.

I was thinking it was more a compatability problem but it is strange that the connection deteriorated.

I might run by target/WalMart/sams and pick up a cheap usb toggle. I love the suggestion of leaving it at work - the little guy cant drop it into water there

if anyone has any other ideas please feel free to post
thanks

Sounds like they might be filtering traffic and forcing disconnects

that was my thought all along but they are denying it. For my connection there are supposed to be no sites off limits, besides what I agree to when I login.

No youtube problems btw

With a similar problem I got a new wireless card and that fixed it. In another case, I turned off the power saving feature of the wireless card to prevent the disconnects. http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/cs-006205.htm

Unless I've overlooked it, you make no mention of the strength of the signal you're getting at work. Could it be you're on the fringe?

Also, to take what jolma said a little further, do you run your laptop on battery at work and something in the power settings disable/power down the wireless NIC?

Otherwise I'd tend to agree with what others have said: some incompatibility between your NIC and the network router at work.

thanks guys
I run the laptop plugged in so not running on battery.
Also, the strength is usually max or close to max bars as displayed on the utility or excellent.

jolma, I just changed to those settings. When I have time later at work I will unplug the usb adapter, reenable the wireless connection and try that - thank you.
Currently I have the situation resolved with a usb adapter but I will report back to see if changing the power settings helped
thank you again, everyone
