How important is Contrast Ratio in a TV

I see
1000:1
to
50,000:1

Lower numbers seem to be on smaller screens, 19 to 22
I was looking at one at WM 50", for $50 more it is 30,000:1 up from 15,000:1

There is no standardized way to measure contrast ratio. It is usually a misleading number, better to ignore it and look at the picture yourself or read reviews.
Some LCD screens have multiple LED backlights, and can dim darker or black areas of the screen to improve contrast, but this is a very expensive feature. Plasma TVs have better blacks than most LCDs, but Plasmas are heavy and use a lot of power.

If you sit very close to a TV, make sure that you get one with 1080P. But, if you sit at a more normal distance, you probably won't see much difference.

Also realize that the 1000:1 is likely a contrast ratio while the 50,000:1 is likely a dynamic contrast ratio. The higher the number the better.

Contrast ratio is the difference between the brightest whites and the blackest blacks that a television or video projector can display. Is that important to you?

Contrast ratio and dynamic contrast ratio is completely different. When comparing tv one should
make sure they are comparing the same thing.
