Windows 7 pricing (32bit to 64 bit)

I have been thinking about upgrading from Vista to Windows 7. Well, today my boss decided to give us all copies of Windows 7 Ultimate as a bonus. Woo hoo! Except he bought us the 32 bit version, and I have 8GB of RAM in my system (running Vista 64).

I think I know the answer to this, but does anybody know of any special pricing where I can swap my new 32 bit copy for a 64 bit, or otherwise buy a 64 bit copy for cheaper now that I have the 32 bit? I haven't found anything, so unfortunately I think the answer is no. I'd rather not complain to him about the nice gesture of giving us this gift just because it wasn't 64 bit...

no, but maybe u can luck out on craigslist for a 32-bit/64-bit swap.

If it is the retail boxed version it should contain both the 32 bit and 64 bit installation discs. The key should run either version.

It seems people have had success using their 32 bit keys to activate the 64 bit version provided the versions are the same (that is, the key for Windows 7 Ultimate OEM 32 bit should work with Windows 7 Ultimate OEM 64 bit). So if I can find somebody with a 64 bit DVD, I'll try that first.

Just like with Vista, the keys for the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7 are completely interchangeable.

Also, each DVD of Windows 7 has every edition of Win7 on it. However, MS added a ei.cfg file to the DVDs that specify what edition that DVD can install. So if you borrow someone's Win7 64-bit DVD of any edition and remove the ei.cfg file, you can use it to install Ultimate.

For example, you could download one of the 64-bit ISOs linked to in the .edu upgrade thread:

Then, you could use the "ei.cfg Removal Utility" from this link to modify the ISO:

I wouldn't use the "Windows 7 ISO Image Edition Switcher" tool for an OEM install, since it might limit the keys to retail/upgrade only.

Thanks
