I am looking to travel to New York City and Niagara Falls. I have following questions

1) Is 2 day enough to see New york city (I am planning to see Statue of Liberty, WTC memorial, Empire State, Times Squre) ?
2) What is best airport to land at for people visiting NYC ?
3) Is 1 day enough to see Niagara Falls from US side (I am planning for boat ride and night lights. anything I missed ?). Not planning to go to Canada side (because of visa requirements for my guests).

Also what are best places to stay for above two cities. I heard that it is better to stay in Buffalo for Niagara Falls. For new york city, I got mixed opinion. Some suggested to stay in NJ and some NYC. Since driving/parking will be bad in NYC I presume it is better to take the Hop-on-Hop-off bus pass in NYC. If I take this type of pass then will it be better to stay in NJ or NYC.
Or anything I missed.

I can help you with NYC... First of all two days will be pushing it to see everything you have listed. You should definatly stay in manhattan with only two days you dont want to spend all of your time traveling in and out of the city. Also do not try to drive/park in the city, take the subway. It is safe clean and quick. Use www.hopstop.com to plan your route.
As far as airports, it depends on where you decide to stay. If you stay in manhattan LGA is closer, if you chose NJ fly into EWR.

Good luck and have fun!

I live in the city and prefer to travel through Newark airport. If you decide to say in Manhattan go with whichever has better air fare, as it is very easy to get into the city from Newark.

You can probably do all you listed in 2 days in the city, but you will be planning a schedule. While in Times Sq did you want to try to catch a broadway show too?

You can get a Canadian visa within a couple of hours at their consulates if you show up in person and have a valid US multiple entry visa to come back...

thank you so much all of you !!
there will be couple 3 year olds with us.. so I presume I should extend the trip to three days.
we will probably skip broadway show..

@stomie : sorry your link did not work. maybe site is down ?

@bozo007: thanks for the tip. However couple of hours would translate to half a day in real world (Kids!!) so I think 'maid of mist' boat ride is a fair compromise.

thanks for tips.. really appreciate it .. keep them coming.. !!

Can't help with Niagara Falls, but for NYC you definitely want to stay in Manhattan if your budget will allow. While NJ or one of the other boroughs would be cheaper, you'll be in effect commuting to your vacation....

I would fly into Newark and take the train or one of the shuttle buses into midtown Manhattan. Depending on where your hotel is, you would probably take a taxi from there.

With just a few days, consider one of the one or two day passes for the double-decker sightseeing buses. They'll take you to all the tourist spots, and if you're not looking to do tons of research and map out every place on your own, it's a great way to see everything.

One other comment; you mention the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building; I assume you mean you want to visit Liberty Island and go up to the Observation Deck in the ES Building; be forewarned that each of these can be a 1/2 day commitment depending on the time of year you're visiting and the crowds at that time.

there are many much more affordable places to stay in Jersey City, NJ which is right across the river from Manhattan. In fact, the Marriot Courtyard in downtown Jersey City is very affordable and is right next door to the PATH train station which can drop you off at 33rd street where you can walk a block to the Empire State Building. Also, there is a Light Rail in Jersey City that can take you to Liberty State Park where you can catch a ferry to the Statue of Liberty. Hope that helps!

Hi MNJ,

To answer ur questions,
1) Is 2 day enough to see New york city (I am planning to see Statue of Liberty, WTC memorial, Empire State, Times Squre) ? -
I would suggest atleast 3 days.
Here are the list of places you can visit.
1. Times Square (try to go in the evenings, the lighting will be good)
2. WTC site
3. Wall Street
4. Brooklyn bridge
5. Staten Island ferry (which is free)
6. Rockefeller center
7. Empire state building
8. American museum of natural history
9. Statue of Liberty
10. Central Park

My personal recommendation would be take the bus tour on the first day, and other 2 days may be a do it your self tour (get the unlimited ride day metro (subway) card ). Google : Bus tour New York

2) What is best airport to land at for people visiting NYC ? - I would say JFK since it is connected to Manhattan by subways run every often, Newark is also a not bad option, I have heard it has delays in flight most of the days and commuting to city is not that easy. Avoid LGA in all cases.

3) Is 1 day enough to see Niagara Falls from US side (I am planning for boat ride and night lights. anything I missed ?). Not planning to go to Canada side (because of visa requirements for my guests). - One day should be ok (you have to rush in seeing places),You can do maid of mist and if you have time you can do 1000 Islands.

For accomudation, I would suggest you to stay in Jersey City, which is well connected with PATH trains. Staying in Manhattan would be ideal but it will make a big dent to your wallet. In Niagara Falls, you can stay in Buffalo which is about 30 mins drive from Falls, you can get good deal, but personally I wont choose that option.

Good luck and Happy Travel,
PD

I would allow 3 days. Like someone else said, the Statue and ESB can take up to 1/2 day each. One way to cut the time is to BUY YOUR TICKETS ONLINE AHEAD OF TIME!! This will save you quite a bit of time as you'll only have one ginormous line to stand in rather than two. Just visited the Statue in December and we waited 3 hours in line to board the ferry. JUST for the ferry. We already had our tickets. Be prepared to wait...a lot.

Personally, I always fly into LaGuardia since it's closer to Manhattan and cab it in. But then again, I've never traveled there with kids.

I always stay in Manhattan. It is more expensive, but the convenience is worth it for me. You're within walking distance or a subway ride from everything.

Hi. We're looking to go to NYC July 7 - 9th. Would like to stay in manhattan for one nite to get the feel of it..pref High rise. Could you suggest a Hotel in the Village area, Manhattan costing less than $200?
Most of Soho and Village area hotels show higher rates. Any suggestions would be helpful.

thanks
