I will be flying into San Francisco on June 11 and returning on June 15th. I need a car definitely for 2-days (from June 11th, reaching San Francisco airport at 7.0 PM, to June 13th, can return the car around 5.0 PM), or can rent it upto June 15th, if the price is good. I can also pick up the car in San Jose,CA if there is a substantial saving. In San Jose, the pickup doesn't have to be at the airport. I searched couple of sites, the best price I got was 59 dollars per day (San Francisco), and higher in San Jose. I also bid on Priceline, but didn't get anything till 30 bucks. I will appreciate of someone can guide me on how to get better price, and where to look.

Why is it so high in San Francisco? Couple of weeks ago, my relatives rented a mid-size (I think) car in Las Vegas for 14 bucks (unlimited mileage), even though they booked only couple of days ( I would say about 10-15 days) before.

Thanks.

Econ 101 - Supply and demand. Cost-push and demand-pull inflation.

Run your numbers on bnm.com and you will get a good idea of your options. Then try some of the codes listed in the threads.

If you don't need it the night you get in, consider renting it in the city (not at the airport) the next morning. You may save alot. Always consider renting at non-airport locations if your itinerary allows. Airport pick-ups mean added fees; airport drop-offs (with city pick-up) do not.

You can take BART into town from SFO for not much $.

Having a car in town each day of your stay, unless you absolutely need it each day, is a hassle. Very pricey parking fees, vs cheap and good public transport.

Thanks for the advice. Actually, I will be flying into San Francisco and staying with my relatives in San Jose. On Thursday and Friday we are planning to go sight-seeing, like Monterey Aquarium and couple other things, if time permits. That is why I want to rent a car for couple of days. I shall be able to pick up the car from any downtown location in San Jose on 12th June, but San Francisco on June 12th will be a problem.

If you could do without renting the car upon arrival you could rent from somewhere close to the airport instead and save a good deal. For an upcoming trip I found a two day rental at Dollar Rent A Car, 1815 Bayshore Highway, Burlingame for $54.12 for two days. They are not open late afternoons though.
Dollar Use Burlingame instead of SFO when you search. San Jose shows $30.90 plus tax per day.

I got some excellent rates from FOX (SFO). It is a small company, but excellent service. You take the Rental Area tram & call FOX for shuttle pick up. They are located right next door to COSTCO's gas pumps if your a member for top off.

Call Enterprise and ask about their weekend rates at the local places. Get quotes from a few as they can really vary! Some will allow the deal for up to 5 days. You should be able to get 50% off and there is a coupon in the Entertainment book for a free day. They will even bring you the car.
