I am planning a family trip to Maui in first week of June. 5 nights/6days,
This is first time to Maui (or Hawaii) and would like to get some advice.

We are staying in Kaanapali and will rent a car during our stay.

questions:
1) what do you recommend in activities? We are 4 adults.

2) what do you recommend to see/explore?

3) anything you can give me advice, appreciate it.

thanks

First recommendation -- search this forum.

Hawaii (and Maui specifically) have been covered numerous times. Search on Hawaii, Maui, or Hana.

Of course, I did before my posting. I didn't find anything from the search.

My family ( me , wife and 3 yr old ) went to Maui first time in March and stayed a little north of Kaanapali in Kahana. Maybe 5 miles north. We loved the laid back atmosphere.. Kaanapali beach was awsome.....with a kid we did the submarine thing, drove north and saw whats recommended in Maui revealed...did whale watching in Malaela. The Hana trip was super hyped and we drove back within 30 mins. Had lunch in Paia. One day we drove to Haleakala volcano...it was nice. You should check the Lahaina Cannery mall for free Hula dances during weekends...there is a Safeway in that mall... we did not do water activities like snorkelling etc as with a kid who gets scared of tides it was impossible.

I got 58 matches (in just the travel forum) for "Hawaii" and 26 for "Maui" and then I got bored.

You only drove 30 minutes on the way to Hana. I don't think you got anywhere near where the all the scenery and sights are, you gave up too early to see anything. The first part is just a highway. (BTW, it is a very long drive and very tiresome. Its probably a do-once thing).

We took a helicopter ride there 11-years ago.. still remember it today, and we are very well traveled.
You flew over the rim of volcano craters, near waterfalls.. really nice
You got a video of your flight.

There is great information over at tripadvisor.com if you search for Maui or specific cities there. Also unbiased reviews of hotels and other activites and restaurants, plus Maui has its own forum where you can ask questions or read all sorts of helpful stuff about the island. I love that site and use it for all of my vacations since finding it.

Where are you staying?

Do the sunrise bike ride at Haleakala. A van picks you up like 3am and drives you to the top. You view the sunrise from the top and you bike down, stopping for breakfast along the way. It's a windy road and the bikes have excellent brakes (at least you hope they do).

Eat at Roy's near Kannapali (I forget the exact town, Kahana?). That's one of the original ones.

Driving to Hana is fun, I did it last summer (2nd time, I also drove it 20 years ago when we were first there). It's more fun with a convertible (but wear a hat to avoid sunburned scalp). The only thing is, I think some of the more interesting stuff is just past Hana, and we just turned around when we got there. Also, it was almost impossible to park at most of the waterfalls along the way. The first one we stopped at (Twin Falls?) had a good (if pricey) fruit stand. Then we started walking in and I swear the thing is like two miles in. Ugh...

I ditto that recommendation! A LOT of fun.

In Lahaina city, Pacific'O restaurant, at 505 Front st., serves tasty, fresh food and has a great ocean view. (http://www.pacificomaui.com/) Get there early evening when they open to get the best table to view the sunset.

Have a great time!

Snorkel at Molokini... Was my first time snorkeling... and remains the most memorable thing I did in Maui...

Happy hour ay Big Moose... Drive to Hana... Long drives, biking.... Sunset... O well... just enjoy!

I second this - have books for each of the Islands. They are also available at Costco and Borders - and there are usually B&M coupons for the latter.

I was told that the bike trips were axed, due to safety. Have they resumed?

Either way, instead of waking up at 3 am and kill two days of your vacation, drive up to Haleakala at THE END OF THE DAY. At that elevation, sunset is as beautiful as sunrise (facing west instead of east), without the hassles.

Rather than deal with the cattle boats for snorkel trips to Molokini (unless you enjoy such things), True FW's rent gear from Snorkel Bob's and go out on your own. Maui Revealed lists lots of great snorkel sites with beach access, so you can go at your own speed and really enjoy yourselves. Some of the best beaches are just north of Kaanapali, such as Kapalua. There are also some great spots between Kihei and Makena.

Definitely spend a day to check out Hana - and the numerous waterfalls along the way.
