Where are you flying from in the US? Depending on when you go, it can get down to $800 during off peak to Europe. If traveling from a major city in the US, it could get down to $300. Being flexible is very important. Last February, I flew NYC to Madrid for $291 round trip with taxes included.

Minnesota, so I could leave from minneapolis/st paul. My husband is a teacher so our summers are free. Is off peak generally in the winter then?

Reason being, it's the rainy season (they like to called it the "Green" season), but it doesn't really matter, it rarely is all-day and rarely everywhere, just pop-up downpours.
My wife (also teacher) and I go to CR frequently and we think the Summer is the nicest time to travel.

Two options: 1. Liberia is the smaller, tourist-oriented airport on the Pacific Coast, most major airlines have daily flights from hubs in the Southern US. Best option if you do not plan to rent a car, stay in and around Pacific resorts, timeshares. 2. San Jose is the capital, much larger, older airport, mix of business and pleasure travelers. Start here if you plan to drive around the country, see both coasts, volcanos, etc. We have done both, believe it is down to personal preference. If you are going to rent a car in San Jose, search web sites of LOCAL providers; it has been a few years, but we ended up with a KILLER deal from the local Budget agency for a small 4WD vehicle, with a GPS (local maps). Check Trip Advisor for idea on where to stay, things to do. Cell phone coverage is surprisingly good in most areas; there is a booth in the San Jose baggage claim area that sells local SIM cards CHEAP - believe it was less than $10, with air time.
