if you can't be in town for those dates, take the Staten Island Ferry- it's always free. You're not as close as the deal in the OP, but you're close enough for a free ride.

Isn't it free one way but you have to pay to come back?

I thought the Staten Island Ferry is only free on Sundays. I could be wrong, but it is a nice scenic ride on Sunday for nothing... Free parking on the Staten Island side too

From my back pages…
A great cheap date was a few hours at Night Court (the real thing in NYC not the TV show based on the real thing in NYC) which could be very entertaining, followed by a relaxing round trip on the Staten Island Ferry, which, on occasion, could be entertaining as well.

I live in SI. The ferry is always free and probably the best n cheapest date in NYC, other than a walk through central park.

Staten Island and just walking around Times Square are the two best free things to do in NYC IMO

Back in 2000, a group of us where in NYC for the first time and saw the line for the ferry moving in. Trying to catch the ferry at the last minute, we thought it was the one that went to the Statue of Liberty. As we are getting close, we are all excited, taking pictures with the SoL behind us, and all of the sudden we keep going past it, we realized that something was not right. That's when someone told us that this was the Staten Island ferry.
Very embarrassing episode. At least I still have the pictures somewhere!
