Been looking for a decent price for a 1-week car rental on Maui beginning Dec 21, for pickup at the airport (OGG). Going thru the various agencies (incl quote machine from carrentalsavers.com and Kayak)
I come up with $800+ for the week, for a Full size car.

I was just about to pull the string and get a Hotel-Car package (which seemed to price the car at approx $400), when I ran across this site Discount Hawaii Car Rental.
They offer brand name (Avis, Budget, etc) as well as no-name, which they call "BRAND X". Estimate for the week came to $316 (incl taxes, I think).

So -- anyone know anything about these guys? Reliable? Accessible?

PS It was suggested (by a travel agent) that I get a Full-Size vs Intermediate -- the reason: more leg room in the rear for the long scenic drives around Maui. My 2 "kids" (age 27 and 32) are not large guys -- approx 5'6", so would a FS be overkill? I'm also concerned a bit about maneuverability as we plan to do the Hana Highway, which I understand is twisty-turny. Standard (Fusion) prices out to $299/wk, not much difference in price.

Thanks
-- Scott

Unless you really are used to a FS or have lots of kids and stuff to cart around, that seems like overkill.

I used one of those Hawaii discount sites last December in Kauai, they were quite a bit cheaper, and I ended up with a car from Dollar, no problems, just like any other rental. I don't remember if it was that site or another (can't locate the e-mail at the moment).

I used them few time and had no problem. I always book class lower and they always give me class higher as they don't have cheaper car. Or they can give you upgrade on the spot.

Brand X it's not noname, it can be any of well known brands who agrees for this rate I think.

FE, I've rented "Wild Pick" ones for $15 a day and got luxary car that usually cost about $100 per day.

You are not going to want to drive a full sized car on the Road to Hana.

we drove what enterprise called a full size sedan on the road to hana and had NO problems whatsoever. The car is what Edmunds or KBB would call a midsize car though. Yes, the road is narrow and one lane only in spots but our midsize car was fine. I appreciated having a slightly upgraded car for its better handling and brakes. A smaller car would have been fine as well. Note gas is about $1 more per galloon than mainland USA.

We got a good deal via costco. We also found discounted car rentals, booking via Island Air and via Aston Hotels. These sites negotiated some decent corporate rates. Our VRBO
landlord suggested mauicruisers.net. They are really cheap but only rent older cars.

Hope you have a nice trip!

Ended up booking directly thru Enterprise, using a discount code I got off Zayln.com (FREE Upgrade). The big savings was by renting from their off-airport office, in Kahului. I did this since I will be flying in late the previous nite, after office closes. They'll come pick me up the next day. FYI -- the Kahului office is approx 3 mi from the OGG Airport.
And yes, this involves a nite at a hotel, but we were going to do that anyway.
BTW Discount Hawaii Car Rental finally replied (took about a day, they seemed overwhelmed), price $416 thru Alamo. Not bad I guess, but I like my off-airport deal better.

Where are you going to stay - I don't recall any hotels near the airport, taxi can become expensive quite quickly, eat up most of the savings, become more hassle than it was worth.

The price difference between intermediate/standard and full size is usually not much, I would go for it. I would continue to check for deals, particularly after Labor day. It may be possible to find a deal on a small SUV, which may be a better option. You may also find something better on one of the opaque sites 14 - 45 days out.

The road to Hana is not that bad; reputation is from the days before it was paved.

Wow... when the ex and I went to Maui back in '05, the rate was ridiculously cheap -- like $15/day. I think it was Alamo, and I got it off their website. Granted, I reserved it about 3 months in advance.

Found a couple of hotels within a few mi of the Aiport, in Kahului -- Maui Beach Hotel; Maui Seaside Hotel. Both around $125. Neither has an a/p shuttle that late, nor a place to eat (my main concerns). A hot tub would be nice.
Part of the savings comes from the difference between this airport hotel and the resort we're booking at Kapalua.
Since our time in Maui was fixed, spending a nite after late arrival would not subtract much from the Hawaii experience*. So we'll collapse at the H. late nite, the start up our visit first thing in the morning.
Thanks
Scott

* well, it seems like a good idea right now

Heed Shank's advice - keep checking rates and looking for deals, it's still a long way out.

We finalized our car on 12/8 last year (for a stay starting on 12/18.) Granted that was partially due to a fairly late decision to go to a wedding, but the rates I found a month earlier were no cheaper. We paid just under $300/week for Kauai for a Fusion (which I think was considered midsized).

OGG Airport area is commercial / light industrial - strip malls, fast food, big box retailers, a couple of psudeo diners.

Kapalua is one of the bet areas to stay on Maui, has become quite pricey as a result. We are partial to South Maui - Wailea, Makena, Kihei - argueably as nice/better, but with fewer crowds, more centrally located - unless you have a reason to deal with the West Maui tourist crowds.

When we were in Hawaii several years ago with our kids (in their teens and a little shorter at the time than your children), I ended up with a Mustang Convertible for a small upcharge over my low corporate rate for a mid-size with Hertz. Believe me when I say they did not complain about being in cramped quarters in the back seat when we drove around Hawaii in a convertible with the top down! And I had not reserved a Mustang, but the Corolla they were supposed to have for me was not available so they asked if I would mind taking the Mustang for a few dollars more. We were on a cruise and I went to pick them up at the pier after getting the car, and everyone was very pleased with my choice.

I really do not think you need a full size car. If I were spending that kind of money, I would get a convertible.

BTW if you are a Costco member, be sure to visit their warehouse on the island. I actually hit their warehouse at every island we visited that had one!

Road to Hana has one lane roads wrapping around a mountain side with the ocean 100ft below and no guard rail (some orange cones). I opted for the tour bus, it's a very long trip too

Really - when were you there - 1965? This is a distortion - road to Hana is quite safe, well maintained, suitable for driving. Pick up the Maui Revealed book, which will describe where to stop along the way for great hikes, secluded water falls - locations tour buses do not stop.

Yeah -- COSTCO, Maui !
Was just reading a thread about that over at Fodors. Some people see a disconnect between the idyllic Hawaiian experience and a down-and-dirty visit to Costco. I like Costco, but only so far. being that it's the only one on Maui, and so close to the Airport, we'll just have to make a stop for supplies (and wine!).

P.S. I drove a '91 Lincoln Towncar up/down Haleakala.
