To prevent this kind of fraud, people need to post real reviews. If lot of them post the reviews then even a few +ve fake reviews will not do any good.

Maybe Newegg's way of verified owner is going to do the trick.
Here is a good article http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/20/technology/finding-fake-review...and not just for hotels, product, etc. A friend at work was talking about his niece getting a job offer from a big "marketing" firm here in Orlando. Basically job was to post fake comments to online articles supporting a certain candidate or political opinion (whoever was paying)

Old news to you. Perhaps a revelation to others.
I posted this hoping some would offer additional anecdotes about reality not matching the crowd-sourced recommendations for transportation/hospitality vendors.

You can buy fake reviews on fiverr, for instance. It's a booming business for college kids. I know a few who make extra money doing this on fiverr.

The entire using-social-media-to-gain-public-trust scam has been around ever since social media was invented. Even sites requiring payment are covertly involved in this process. There is no guarantee that any review is real unless you have written it yourself...and you are writing an honest review. That said, I use yelp and tripadvisor and refer to various blogs frequently, cognizant of the prevalence of fraudulent comments on 'em. Caveat emptor.
