RickSteves.com for your Europe needs.

google 'travel by rail in europe'. Lots of info.

it looks like you can take an overnight from Dijon to Florence. Total cost from Paris starts at about $200 with couchette. You could probably fly for less. Generally train travel is very nice, very safe, but 15 hours from Paris is not going to be that great, especially if you go cheap. I would be a little careful in Italy when you get off the train(s). If you get a railpass, you can visit a couple of great cities on the way.

Haven't you read Atlas Shrugged? Rail travel is very dangerous.

For this route, I would fly. One example route might be easyjet from Paris Orly to Pisa. Pisa has much more cheap flight service than Florance. This method is so popular that there are frequent 2 hour trains from the Pisa airport train station to downtown Florence station ( which is a cheap ticket also). No overnight train needed.

P.S. Train travel in Europe is safe and amazingly efficient. You should have no trouble getting around.

Filling with grunts, periodic wailing noises, and smelling of blood.

Rent a car & drive it...through "local" roads. Ensure that you have a good GPS (must...yes, must have speed/safety cameras installed) w/ you.
The sceenary on the way are so beautiful...but, there are so many speeding cameras especially, near the town areas. So, be careful...don't get a picture taken by a surprise.

Have funsssssss...

^^

you have to disclose that gas is $10/gallon
