IF YOU HAVE A PERSONAL QUESTION, THAT CAN HELP ONLY YOU, PLEASE LIMIT THAT WITHIN PRIVATE MESSAGES WITH THE PERSON OF YOUR INTEREST. THANKS FOR YOUR COOPERATION.

From the number of posts in this thread, I am sure it helped a lot of desis and will continue to do so in coming future. However, please refrain from asking quotes in this thread. Your consideration is much appriciated.
A problem faced by most of us living in US is right information about transit visa when we have to travel through EU countries. In coming days I am going to add transit visa requirements from most of the EU countries.

Best time to travel
Here is what I found from Alanita's website about seasonal fares:-

Jan 17 2005 to May 08 2006 (Low Fare)| May 09 2006 to May 31 2006 (Medium Fare)|
Jun 1 2006 to Jul 12 2006(High Fare) | Jul 13 2006 to Dec 10 2006 (Medium Fare) |
Dec 11 2006 to Dec 27 2006 (High Fare) | Dec 28 2006 to May 08 2007(Low Fare)
The fare database above is approximately followed by other airlines too.

Also, please post your itinerary and paid $$$$ for the plane fare so we can have a good idea of the current fares/promotions.

Old travel agents review/contact links. Some phone number may not necessarily work since the list was from 1998.

Following tips were collected from quick editors. Thanks for the effort.

# ALWAYS call various airlines directly for pricing. I check United, AirFrance, Delta, Lufthansa and British Airways. I have always been able to find the best fares via their phone centers. Most airlines let you "hold" a reservation for 2-3 days. If you plan to do multicity/open jaw or want to stay for a few days in Europe on the way to/from India, you need to call. For simple round trips online works fine too to avoid the "handling fee"

# Hold a reservation first at the lowest price you can get through an airline directly and then go about fare shopping at various travel agents. It costs nothing to hold a reservation with an airline directly

# Be prepared for low to no service from travel agents who give you a rock bottom price. You chose low price over service so no complainin' or cryin'

# Be prepared for airlines to NOT help for all agent booked flights. All requests for changes et al must come from the travel agency, the rationale being that airlines have already paid a commission to the travel agent and the agent is supposed to take care of you. Since to give you a rock bottom price the agent must have shared part of that commission with you, do not expect to get fast and courteous service

# Do not forget to use your frequent flyer number to get miles. Check to see if different airlines are partners. e.g. if fying British Airways, provide a united frequent flyer number if all your existing miles are with United and vice versa

# Just want to add that the reason airlines will refer back to your travel agent is that the low consolidator fares come with their own contract clauses, like chage fee, one free change allowed, cancellation fee. Sometimes going through a travel agent will allow for a free date change but not if you go through the airline directly. Especially true if you are booking travel from India to US.

TRAVEL THRU UK MAY REQUIRE A VISA, SO DOUBLE CHECK WITH TRAVEL AGENT/BA WEBSITE IF YOU FALL UNDER SUCH CATEGORY
As per FWer WHsung,
" In my application, I was required to send the itinerary which clearly stated the dates I would be travelling through LGW (Sep 2 and Oct 9). I also included a cover letter that stated the travel dates.
I applied on June 15. When my transit visa came, I noticed that it was valid only from June 15 through Sep 15 making my return through LGW impossible!!! The person at the UK embassy, I guess, forgot to read my itinerary and also my cover letter!
So I had to call the UK embassy support and was charged $2.10 /minute (see this http://www.britainusa.com/visas/articles_show.asp?i=65021&L1=41000)
I was told to send back my passport and finally they issued me a visa valid for 1 year.
It was frustrating time...
So just as a warning, if you have to apply for a UK visa (if you need it that is), make sure you use a highlighter to mark the dates!"

Persons travelling with kids
According to a fellow FW member Lufthansa rocks if you are travelling with a kid under 2. Here is his quote,
"
For people travelling with an infant under 2 years of age, Lufthansa can't be beat. They give you a bassinet in which a child under 2 years can sleep very comfortably. Many people are worried that if they do not take a full ticket for an infant, they have to carry him in their arms throughout the way. As long as people have bulkhead seats in Luftahnsa, they WILL give you an infant bassinet, regardless of what you are told by the ticketing agent. I have heard horror stories about other airlines like PIA not having bassinets at all or bassinets so small that only a mouse may fit in them.
2 thumbs way up for Lufthansa IF you are with an infant.
"

IF YOU HAVE A PERSONAL QUESTION, THAT CAN HELP ONLY YOU, PLEASE LIMIT THAT WITHIN PRIVATE MESSAGES WITH THE PERSONOF YOUR INTEREST. THANKS FOR YOUR COOPERATION.
About the below statement by OP:

"# Be prepared for airlines to NOT help for all agent booked flights. All requests for changes et al must come from the travel agency, the rationale being that airlines have already paid a commission to the travel agent and the agent is supposed to take care of you. Since to give you a rock bottom price the agent must have shared part of that commission with you, do not expect to get fast and courteous service"

This is not always true. How it works is that agents buy bulk tickets from the airlines at a negotiated fare, so airlines don't know how much you paid for it. Also, the agent you buy the ticket from determines the cancellation/change fees - hence the need to go through the agent to make changes/cancellations.
You have every right to call and expect service from the airline for things they can help you with, like meal requests, seat changes, etc.

BEWARE OF HIGHFLY TRAVELS!!
I called Alanita travels and got a price quote of $1025 on my trip. Then called Highfly travel and the agent gave me a quote of $1060. I said i already have a quote of 1025 he put me on hold for a minute and then returned and said we'll do even lower and gave me a price quote of $1005 ! I said ok i'll take it. He told me to fax him all my credit card info and travel dates etc which i did and then for 2 hours no response from him so i called back he says it's not going through today i'll try tomorrow morning. I called next morning he says the airline has increased their fuel surcharge and now the price is $1060. I told him to throw away my credit card info and called Alanita and booked it for $1025. So i again say HIGHFLY TRAVELS IS SCAMMER AND WILL JUST WASTE YOUR TIME DO NOT DEAL WITH THEM!!!!

Don't get so upset. It's only $35. If you want to cry about that, I think I have to ranked the desi agents in the form of lower scamming policy. But thank you anyway for the input.

You sound stupid. It's not about money it's about the time that you waste (discussing everything on phone and then faxing the agent completed reservation form and copies of your credit card and driver's license) and breach of trust by agent telling you later on that you gotta pay more.
Anyway, just to correct your math, the agent increased his price from $1005 to $1060 = +$55
and now i booked with Alanita in $1025 so i paid only $20 more than $1005.
I DON'T SEE A FIGURE OF $35 ANYWHERE IN THERE

I felt you were being rude telling me to quit crying about $35!!
Highfly travel is still scamming because of people like you because you don't care. You take into account only $35 from one person but i think $35 from each careless person in this big country will amount to a big total. Also, in my opinion, a person dealing in millions and scamming in millions is equal to a person dealing in hundreds and scamming in hundreds.

I don’t think Highfly scams anybody, I have dealt with them all the time since they are local to me; one time someone in the family died and my mom had to go for the funeral; they booked her on a fully booked flight and printed the ticket on a Sunday on which they are supposed to be closed.

alert mods

I agree about that. Airfare depends a lot about teh seating also. In same plane you can see good seats and siiitholes. Depending on that, teh price can go up and down for few bucks. In most cases, teh bargain fare we got from desi agents has to be paid for by seating. In numerous occassionals I had to fly with seats with no window in window position seat.

it's funny that the airline increased the price only for the highfly travel not for other agents

alert mods

Just want to add that the reason airlines will refer back to your travel agent is that the low consolidator fares come with their own contract clauses, like chage fee, one free change allowed, cancellation fee. Sometimes going through a travel agent will allow for a free date change but not if you go through the airline directly. Especially true if you are booking travel from India to US

alert mods

Guy!

It's also better to use frequent flyer miles and try to choose few particular airlines for that as well.

alert mods

Thanks
Appreciate the effort.
BTW, I have a good experience with Alanita, they offered very good rates with Continental last nov. which was discussed in the forum I believe.

alert mods

Guys, Here everybody is expessing their view from customer side, but I would like to express my view from Travel Agent side too, which we experience time to time to run travel agency.

- To stay in competition market with other agents, sometime we do not get a big reward (as you think) based on time spent to give best deal to customer.

- Sometime customer calls on Monday to get price for one airline (which has lowest cost), he will spend 3-4 days to talk with other agents to get price and when he come back on Friday to make booking based on lowest fair quoted earlier, we initiate booking based on the names given by him and we find that now seat is not available for the class which he was quoted. I am not talking about economy class or first class. There are different booking classes for different price rate. Finally, We have to re-quote next higher price to the customer, for which seat is available on Friday. Customer thinks that we changed price…but that’s not the truth.

- When customer calls for India, we tell him that currently, this airline has lowest fair. - - We tell them based on our everyday business and customer will not trust us at that time, then customer start narrowing his flight route like, (1) I can not wait for 4 hours on Mumbai Airport or (2) I can not wait for 6 hours on Delhi Airport to catch next available Air-Sahara flight to Bangalore, Can you try something else? (3) My infant is going India with me and coming back with my wife (4) I need a direct flight which goes directly to Calcutta, I don’t want to go via Bombay or Delhi, in fact there is only one flight for Air-India on Friday which goes directly to Calcutta from London and main problem is All USA AirIndia flights reach to London in the morning and Culcutta direct flight leave London for Culcutta in the night time, so whole day waiting on London airport.

By the way all above reason looks fair to you but main problem is customer ask all these with lowest fair for which we have to follow airlines rules & restriction, To get above things, customer needs to understand that any special customization to his trip does not come with lowest fair. I am trying to say that If you want lowest price then please be little bit flexible, do not narrow down your choice such a way that it’s takes lots of time for the agent to deal with you, after all we are not making much with great margin as you think. Try to understand that travel agent can give you best as they can and why will not they give you? they don't have to give something from their pocket.

All the airlines has contract with domestic codesharing airlines. When Airlines publish price (codes) for USA to India, in the rules they clearly mention that which airlines we can connect for domestic connection. For example, United Airlines connect to Air-Sahara with same price. Now, if Air-Sahara's time is not comfertable with customer and he/she wants Jet Airways then price get change.

Less then 2 years old Infant , Infant is attached to parent or guardian ticket, For infant generally airlines gives a basket type sleeping bed, which hooks to the flight partition infront of your seat (generally first seat in each block). first, Up to 6 month infant gets proirities then remaining infant get those basket

Generally, ticket price calculation for
Infant (opt of Lap) 10% of Adult Ticket Base price + Full Tax
Child (with Seat) 75% of Adult Ticket Base price + Full Tax

Updated 2006/04/12 -- As you guys are encouraging to write more..here it is...

When you start calling agents, they will ask you to provide passenger names..You may hesitate to give names at that point but here is what happens behind the scene... Give name only when you decide finally to go with specific airline and with specific agent's price. We need names to hold seats, Giving names does not cost to you but when you give name, we initiate reservation and then finally we can know that you are getting confirmation for all start-to-end connected flights or not. Once we get confirmation, we get booking confirmation number. You reservation keep holding seat for 3 days, if you don't pay or don't decide to go with that booking then it get cancel automatically. So, when you are sure for your travel, giving name is good for you. Once we hold seat for you, we can change the flight or date whatever you ask and it does not cost anything, but after you pay and we print tickets, you can not change anything after that point for FREE.

Can not we use dummy names to hold seats? NO. Airlines restrict to use dummy names or to put duplicate names on different airlines. Sometime with some airlines, we use dummy name to findout exact penny to penny price and which connection flight we are getting.

Also, when you give names to agent, make sure it's spelled exactly as it's in your passport. After tickets printed, having incorrect names is headache.

Lugguage Question: Is Air-India still allows 70Lbs or is it 50 Lbs?
Right now, when I am writing whenever you catch Air-India directly (for example from Chicago, Newark, LAX) you can take 70lbs weight as per Air-India rules, If your journey STARTS with other connecting airlines like (AA or UA or Delta) you are allowed to carry only 50lbs based on their rules. My personal wish is: they should allow us to carry 70lbs because from deals posted at fatwallet site, most of us will have purchased lots of deal items for relatives in India. and on return "Mari-Masala" recovers our cost (specially for those people who do not live in Chicago,NJ)

All other airlines allows 50lbs weight limit.

Transit Visa
Lots of people also has question about Transit Visa. We leave it up to passenger to verify finally with Authority but below link is from U.K.'s official website..Please read exception point 1 to 5 carefully, it's most helpful when you have question about your case.

Check the rules and exception carefully here on..
Official Site for U.K. Transit Visa

Official Site for Germany Transit Visa
Also, Airport Transit in Germany

France Transit Visa Rules

The reason we keep it up to passenger because even when we check with different airlines, we also get different answer when their CSR do not have detailed knowledge of rules and exception. Somewhere we had heard that there is special exception for Air-India passenger (because they stay in the flight) but we were unable to confirm it with authority.

When I am writing, JET AIRWAYS does not starts from USA, JET AIRWAYS has contract with other airlines to pick-up passenger from London. Where does this make difference to you? It makes difference in transit visa because you will be changing terminals on London airport.

Why price is high in June/July? becuase (1) during this time schools have summer vacation (2) marriage season in India so, this is best time for the family to go India and Airlines know that. time-to-time Air-India gives us paper to count price for USA to India (it's like pivot table which covers all the airport in USA and in India.) you will surprice that this time they have mentioned to use same page for June/July and December month. What it means to you? Either you go in June/July or December price is going to be same based on that table, except they publish promotion for that month.

3 Months Return or 6 Month Return ?
Please note that there are two different types of rates based on your return time period (1) One is 3 month return period and (2) 6 month return period. Some airlines also has 4 month return period. 6 months fare are higher then 3 months. Sometime when H1 candidate's wife goes to India and she has to go to Embassy to get next visa, please count waiting time for her interview. We had a customer, who purchased 6 month return ticket and the date they received from Embassy was after her return date and over 6 month. In this scenario, if you cancel ticket No Refund, and can not change date above 6 month so? they choose to go Delhi or other city Embassy instead of Bombay to get their interview date quicker.

Updated 2006/04/13 -----------------------

Weekend Charges
Some airlines (not all) charges $25 Extra for the weekend travel on each side.
Departuring from USA FRI/SAT counts Weekend (Not Sunday) and Departuring/Returning from India SAT/SUN counts weekend.

Locking Luggage
Some people thinks that After Sept. 11 they can not lock their baggage. This is not true, After TSA check and pass your lugguage from X-Ray machine, you can lock your baggage and it's recommanded as recently complain has increased for missing precious items from the baggage.

Stopover in Europe
For example, during your travel if you want to stopover at London for 3-5 days, it does not cost much more. Some airlines allows FREE stopover, it only adds London Airport Tax in your ticket price (around $60 to $100)

FREE stopover in Kuala Lumpur (in Malaysia) at Malaysia Airline's Expense
When you are traveling with Malaysia Airlines via KUL and your next connecting flight is not within 6 hours THEN Malaysia Airlines will provide you FREE Hotel Accommodation. The process is when you reach KUL, go to their check-out counter and they will provide you Hotel Voucher. They will provide transportation to reach hotel. What about luggage? If your connecting flight is in next 24 hours then they will hold your luggage bags so you will not have to worry about those heavy bags and make sure you keep your camera in your handbag (cabin lugguage) to take pictures at Petronas Towers. Remember, this free accommodation is for up to 24 Hours.

Good time to buy Tickets
In April month, people have started to make enquiry for Sept, Nov, Dec months travel. If you are looking for Sale price then you should wait because Airline publish Sale or Promotional Fare before 2-3 months ahead only. In April month, no one airlines will publish Sale or Promotional Fare for November or December. Air-India has published price till December but that's regular price. For example, We had a enqury for LAX to BOM for Sept. Based on regular Air-India price it's coming $1340 for Sept. and Even though June/July is high fare season, for June it's coming $1190. This is becuase $1190 is Air-India Sale price, for which Ticket needs to be issued by April 19th.

- On April 13th, Air-India sent Agent Bulltin for another one of the best fare for NYC/CHI to DEL which is $825 (including approx Tax). The rules for this Sale is Travel dates needs to April 14th to May 9th, Tickets needs to be issued by 30 April. Weekend charges are extra which will be $25 each side.

2006/04/17 ----------------------

Travelling with Infant
When travelling with infant, call airlines 2-3 days before your travel date to enter your name in queue. Please have ticket number, confirmation number and Infant's birthdate ready. For Infant, you are allowed one lugguage bag plus stroller also. Small stroller is very helpful on the airport. When you are travelling by Boeing flight, you may see a big line (specially for Air-India) to check-in and get into flight and when you have infant or child, you get first chance to get in the flight without standing in queue.

Confusing Attractive Price
When you see attractive price advertised on the website, before using that price as a reference, make sure it includes taxes. Always compare tax included final price. Fare and taxes are different for each airlines, so to save your time, just go by final price.

2006/04/22 ----------------------

Return Ticket or One Way Ticket
If you are going India for more then 6 months then it's better you buy One Way ticket and then buy return ticket from India. Below will give you idea on price difference, We use following equation to get one way ticket price based on return ticket price provided to us by airlines.

One Way Ticket Price = 60% of Return Ticket Price + 50% of Taxes for Return Ticket

Good Routes
I have more detail to put in this route section but I will add it as time permits. Please PM me if you want to add some route, which you have experienced time saving PLUS money saving. Here I will add those route which involves multiple airport but still saves time for not changing flight and also makes difference in custom checking. These routes benefits more to aged people when they have hard time to change flights and terminals on airports.

AGENT BULLETIN UPDATES
2006-05-01 If you are thinking to buy Air-India tickets during May first week then hurry up and buy it. Air-India is increasing Fuel Surcharge on/after 8th May which will be approx $30 to $68 increase to existing $200 (average) fuel Surcharge. This will apply to ticket issued on/after 8th May 2006.

If you have planned to travel with Air-India between 11th May to 25 May and have received quote from your agent before 1st May and have not purchased ticket yet, then please go back to your agent and ask him to re-quote it, because on 1st May bulletin, Air-India extended 11th May promotion up to 25th May, and you will be saving around $100. If your agent is not honest then he may not reveal this to you and that $100 can go to his pocket. If your ticket has been already issued on/before 30th April 2006 then nothing can be done.

Bad News: From Monday May 22, 2005 onwards Air india is increasing taxes by $20.00 (each way $10.00). This is second time increase in this month, but still Air-india's tax is better then Lufthansa because Lufthansa tax is already at highest level (above $400) ( "Charamsima")

Good News -- Posted June 15th 2006
From Chicago or Newark to DELHI, Air-India decreased price. Following is difference. Remember, in past I had said that Air-India’s business tactic is to run behind other airlines price. Following proves it. They made big decrease in Delhi price from August 13 to stay in competition with Continental (from Newark) and American Airlines (from Chicago). With reference to below, After August 13-29 Sept. price is to low as it was between Jan to May.

05 JUL – 22 JUL........$xxx
23 JUL – 12 AUG.......$xxx - $140
13 AUG - 29 SEP......Early Bird $xxx - $430, Late Bird $xxx- $250, More Late Bird $xxx - $80
30 SEP – 12 OCT......Early Bird $xxx - $275, Late Bird $xxx – 95
13 OCT – 13 DEC......$xxx - $140

Above all $xxx is same, I hope above will give you idea on when to travel to get low price.

Air-India Sale for 15th July to 30th Sept. - *NEW
- This sale is for Transatlantic side which covers majority of USA airports. (Transpacific side (LAX/SFO) already has separate sale price.)
- Compare to previous prices, price decreased $210 to $130 overall. (Again, I said "overall")
- This Sale puts Air-india lowest compare to other airlines.
- Now, From USA, Price is same for any of these destinations: BLR,CCJ,CCU,COK,GOI,HYD,MAA,LKO,PNQ,TRV which was not a case before.
- Only Chicago to Ahmedabad or Chicago to Delhi/Bombay has two different price for 07/15 to 08/12 and 08/13 to 09/30, remaining all has same price from 15th July to 30 Sept so, does not matter when you travel.
- This sale price covers up to 30th Sept so there should not be any more sale to cover up to 30th Sept from Air-india. I mean "that's it.'.
