Hi

Travelling from Europe for a 2-weeks trip in California (and Nevada), I'll be at Las Vegas on the nights of 18-19 April, and 19-20 April. I've booked my night already for 19 April at Luxor with a special promo found on their website. I cannot find interesting deals (less than 200$) for other same/better level hotels for the night of 18-19 April.

I'm wondering whether it would be wise to wait until the last moment (unless new promotions appear in the meantime) to book a room for that night. So my question is: do you think there is a good chance to obtain a good reduced price if I book a room for the 18 April a few days before?

Many thanks in advance for your help !!

Mikael

Hello,

I am a first-class newbie when it comes to reserving hotels and I just realized that you need a Credit Card ONLY to reserve AND pay off the hotel reservation?? Are Debit cards NOT allowed when it comes to reserving and paying? This could totally ruin our spring break because myself or my friends do not have CC's but instead debit cards...

someone say it isn't so! ='(

as long as your debit cards have the visa logo you should be fine.

$120 per night at Caesar's? Can't beat that? If you travel to vegas and actually pay for a room you're getting the shaft. i've never paid for a room in vegas. My wife and I stayed for 11 nights in a row, all comped.

My wife and I stayed for 11 nights in a row, all comped.Comps do not fall from the sky. At the very least, you have to gamble significant amounts of money on a relatively regular basis to get your stays comped, especially for the better part of two weeks. It is my guess that you have paid for your room with the money your lost (or perhaps lost and won back or a large buy-in) at the tables. That is fine if that is your entertainment budget or if you are comfortable with that level of risk.

Many of us do not have a large bankroll, so until I get offers for comped stays as a result of playing less than $50 on the slots or video poker per day, I am content taking advantage of the great hotel deals that are out there.

To each their own. Very few things in life are free...so you likely paid for that comped stay in one way or another from the casino's point of view. If all you spent was your gambling budget, more power to you. Not all is black and white as you present it.

Most Las Vegas hotels have pretty good cancellation policies, they will let you change or cancel a reservation as long as it's 48hours in advance. Find a reasonable rate and book it NOW. (double check the cancellation policy, especially on internet only rates). If you find something better in the future, you can always cancel your original reservation, but being stuck without a place to stay, or staying in some crappy motel sucks.
Prices change day by day, so keep checking. I've had trips that I've rebooked rooms 10 different times.

Oh, and for debit cards, I think some casinos will put a large hold (more than the deposit) on the card. Call a reservation desk, they should be able to tell you how it works. And you can pay in cash once you are there, but they do usually want a card for incidentals and to enable the phone in your room.

Now, to get your answer, you should probably call the hotel back and qualify your question with "...and can I then go straight to my room?" You have not asked the proper question to the reservation desk, and to be honest, their answer is the only answer I'd feel comfortable with if the answer is very important to you.

Policies change and fact circumstances are different, so an answer you get here may not be relevant to your trip.

drubbs said:Do not go to the Top of the World Restaurant, as previously mentioned. Yes the view is great but the food is not, and it is overpriced. If it is a good meal you are looking for at a reasonable price, go to the Steakhouse at Circus Circus. I know, Circus Circus is a dump, but the Steakhouse is fantastic, and you should be able to have a nice meal in your price range. You won't get too far with $120 at most fancy restaurants in the larger hotels in Vegas. Trust me you, and the person you take will love the meal here (assuming you enjoy steak)

I took my family to the Steakhouse in Circus Circus based on the reviews here. The service was terrible, and the food was just okay. It was way overpriced for what we received. We ate one night in Bally's, I think it was an italian place, that was outstanding and less expensive than the Steakhouse

Did you check the Vegas Promo threads at the top of this site? Any why didn't you book both nights at the Luxor on their promo? I would hate to only have two nights in Vegas and spend 1/2 a day changing hotels. If you do some research you can get Harrahs for about $135 on the night you are looking for using Harrahs best rate guarentee.

Regardless, I would definately not wait a few days before a date when hotel rates are high to book a room. Why do so many people think this would be successful? Hotels set their rates based on demand. If room rates are high for a Wednesday night, it means there is a lot of demand for that particular night - Probably a convention or some special event is in town.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with tours outside of Vegas that they were pleased with. I'm looking for a tour for 2 under $100. Looking for something adventurous. Horseback, airplane, hiking, boat, or raft.
Any experiences?
Thanks!
Bella

Great! Thanks for your guidance. I had a look at the Vegas promos, and could not find anything interesting. I will definitely check now more closely to the Harrahs option and take a more expensive room to prevent a bad surprise.

Thanks Again !

Just got back. It isn't adventurous, but we went to the Hoover Dam Mini Tour w/ Gray Line/Coach USA Tours. It was $40/person which gave us 2 hours to sightsee and take the $11/person 45-min discovery tour under the dam. You don't have to take the discovery tour, but it is only $2 over your budget. Go around these next couple of months. The guide said it is TOO HOT (130 deg -- in the shade!) in the summer, and too cold in the winter.

I liked it despite what the other person said on the first page. The pyramids are made of stone, so I guess we shouldn't bother seeing that in our lifetime either.

I didn't notice any adventure tours for $50/person.

Other things/deals I noticed while there...
- Buffet at Bellagio was great! Best deal: Step in line by 10:15AM (weekday) to have breakfast AND lunch buffet choices at the breakfast price ($15)!
- Buffet at Caesar's was not good. Variety is like what you would get at your local buffet, maybe less even.
- There are booths on the strip called Tix 4 Less (or something like that) that offered great discounts on shows available that night. I saw the Blue Man Group offered for about 35% off. Seems legit, many people flocked to the ticket agent around 4-ish. The risk is that shows you want to see may be sold out.
- If you buy tix to Blue Man Group, you will get free admission to Madam Tussaud's Museum (reg. $24/person). This is the only way I would recommend seeing the museum because I don't think it is worth $24.
- If you know where you want to go, use the Deuce double-decker bus to go up and down the strip. It's cheaper than the monorail/taxi and faster than walking. It's only $5 for an all day pass.
- M&M store was cool!
- Cirque du Soleil "O" is a must see! There are about 5 other CdS shows, but this was at our hotel so we decided to watch it.
- Blue Man Group was pretty good, too.

...That's all I remember for now. Hope this helps.

Is Vegas a good place to take kids? (Ages 3 and 12). I am thinking "no" but I remember there was a promo a few years back to try to get families to visit. If we were to visit, what would be good things to do and see and where should we stay? My 12 year old would love to see Blue Man Group, is their Vegas show family friendly? Thanks!

ETA: They have double decker busses now??? My ds would definitely love that, hmm...maybe Vegas should go on our list afterall?

EiYaYa - this is a VERY contentious topic. If I had kids I wouldn't take them to Vegas - but everyone has their own opinion. There is a lot of nudity on display in Las Vegas. The billboards, the taxis, even on the ground (because of these cards they pass out on the street advertising how to get "strippers" to your room - people throw them all over the ground). There's lots of gambling, lots of smoking, lots of rowdy drunk people. Many casinos will not allow children inside unless they are refistered guests. Some also disallow strollers entirely. None will allow children on the gaming floor.

There are a lot of things that kids would probably enjoy seeing - like the aquarium, some shows, the MGM lions. There are also some great pools. The 12 year old would probably be fine. But I would strongly discourage you from bringing the 3 year old. Vegas is just too instense for a kid that young. It's loud and exhausting. A lot of places won't let you in (casino/hotels, restaurants, etc). Exposing the kids to heavy smoking everywhere (literally everywhere - besides southern Virginia - Vegas is the only place I know where some restaurants don't even have nonsmoking sections) probably isn't a great idea, especially for a 3 year old.

If you really want to take your 12 year old to the Blue Man Group, they do play other locations. I know that at least a couple years ago they were playing New York.

Agreed, I wouldn't recommend going to LV w/ kids. Too much pr0n ads while walking the strip (pun intended! ) and too many anti-kid rules in the casinos. Great for singles, newlyweds, empty-nesters, and retirees though. Drop the kids off with the in-laws if you really want to go. The majority of the shows eventually go cross-country (CdS, BMG, David Copperfield, Toni Braxton, Prince, Liza Minelli, Celine Dion [last season in LV], Phantom of the Opera, etc.). I doubt "O" will ever hit the road, though. The water stage is custom-built.

To find "kid-friendly" places, you will have to venture off the Strip to some of the national and state parks.

At last check, Blue Man Group could be seen in Chicago and NYC. There is little reason to try and catch a show in LV at inflated prices that can be seen in other locales.

Besides that, the dispartity in the ages of your children will likely make it difficult to find things that they both enjoy no matter where you go.

I would just like to add for those who are Costco members, check out their Travel site. They apparently have an agreement with America West Vacations. I just booked Mandalay Bay for Memorial Day for 2 nights from DFW for 2 people. I saved a wad of cash doing that and would've saved more if I could play with the dates a little. I then booked 2 Phantom of the Opera tickets using Travelzoo's code of PP1TZOO1 (Orchestra: $92 (reg. $125)).

Well, I just got back from my 4th trip to Vegas and it was the trip from HELL..... I stayed at the MGM Grand and let me tell you, if they flew me out there for free, gave me $5,000.00 in gambling money and let me stay for free I would pass. I have never in all of my life had such a horrible hotel experience. PM me if you want details. Check in at the airport was smooth and easy... after that forget. I was very disappointed with the experience at this hotel. Would never stay again.
