The full size car I mentioned and the period for rental is pretty much fixed, because the flights have already been booked.
I prefer the national car because we were the exclusive members and had good experiences with them before. Also we could bypass the counter which saves lots of time.
I'm not familiar with the rental car discount codes in Canada.

anyway, I might try online bidding in Priceline instead if I cannot find any better deal.

thanks for your time and patience.

How to ask for help.
When posting a request, be sure to give all the pertinent info: type of car you would prefer (and what you might settle for); dates and p/u times (along with how flexible you may be on this, and remember there isn't much of a grace period nowadays and that extra hour may cost a LOT) and WHERE you will be picking up and dropping off.

Also, you MUST post a bare minimum of 3 codes and companies from the Matrix thread you have already tried (preferably something you can qualify for) and what the results were for each, including fees and taxes.

Glance at the first page of the thread and thoroughly review the most recent 5-6 pages to see what's working well lately and what topics are under discussion This way, we don't re-create your work; your post may help someone else; and perhaps you will have learned something valuable doing your homework. Remember that this is all volunteer and it's just as much work for the old-timers to plug in the numbers as it is for the newbies. You must make an investment of time if you want to save money.-- pretty much like with everything else.

Hi all, I need to rent a car for about 25-30days for a trip. I'm under 25 so I try to use the code which can waive the undeage fee.
I haven't decided how long I should have the car, because when you rent by week or rent by month the price is quite different, and i try to find the cheapest

1. Hertz, CDP # 1911795 (GENERIC TRAVEL & INCENTIVE) , 4 weeks at 180.00 USD 720.00 USD + tax
2. Hertz, gold plus membership, 1 month at 1002.28 USD 1002.28 USD +tax / another location 4 weeks at 233.75 USD 935.00 USD
3. Enterprise, XVC1092, $ 918.00 USD / month , $ 1,090.13 USD Total
4. on Priceline, there's enterprise $737 total price (includes taxes and fees), $607 /month, but i wonder if underage fee is waived
5. Budget USAA BCD Y126500, coupon code MUGZ001, $ 566.99, Total after taxes and fees– 644.37 USD, I don't know if there's underage fee and I guess yes

What freaks me out is that I try the hertz search about 3-4 days ago and my gold plus membership ( this is the only code which I can prove) give me a monthly rate of about around $560 and $640 after tax. I didn't book at that time and today I tried again the price rise to $1000 which is a $400 difference!!! Unbelievable. Should I wait? I wonder if it will drop again
I was wondering if you guys can help me find a better rate for my rental

Rates are a function of supply and demand.

Unless you can predict those factors, you can't predict the pricing.

Need a compact or mid-size from Aug 21 to Aug 29 @ SJC (San Jose Intl Airport). Any deal out there?

Moderator Comment: This new list for requests is a bit more tailored toward cars.

Before posting your request, make sure to check out the codes in this thread, especially the original post. Then, look over the last 5 or 6 pages for code updates. If you have done that and tried at least 3 codes and/or companies, you’re ready to post your request.

1) Title should start with the word "REQUEST" (e.g. "REQUEST – Car Rental at LAX")
2) Dates you plan to travel. Being as specific as possible is a must. If times can be a little flexible, please indicate that.
3) Departure and Destination.
4) What you have found so far in your own research. Please make sure to have tried at least 3 different codes and/or companies. Please supply the rates you received with each code and/or company (This prevents duplication of research and is a great way to inform the community of what is out there!) — Jun. 8, 2012 @ 11:03am

Please follow the yellow sticky below your original post.

Forum guidelines ask that you try a minimum of THREE codes listed that you QUALIFY for (have proof of affliliation).
List size of car, code/coupon used and total including all taxes and fees.
This prevents others who might help from duplicating your search.

We are people looking for deals like you, not paid travel agents. There is a wealth of information here but you need to make an effort. If you are unable or unwilling then you will find there is probably no assistance. Read thru the most recent 3-4 pages to see how to do a proper post and what codes are working.

Does anybody know if budget or Avis has a code to waive the underage fee? the price for hertz is a little bit high and enterprise has the limited mileage...

What are the specific codes (rather than group names) you tried? Providing the proper information will help others who want to find a car rental deal.

rated:

Don't think we legitimately qualify for any codes.

Costco automatically generates the lowest price using their offers, BJ's offers a heap of offers and we tried most all of them posting only the lowest here, AARP presented a chart of offerings and I posted the lowest, same for Priceline and Kayak. I also tried going to the companies sites and just entering the dates etc but Costco beat them all.

rated:

You could try for a midsize with National and hope they have the car you want on the Emerald Aisle.

rated:

I thought about something like that for awhile but we'll be camping with two kids for three weeks and a small SUV is necessary; if anything tight. That's just too much of a risk to take, but thanks for the suggestion.

Added: Looked into it, curious. Price difference was $30 total. I also tried using the National Emerald Club and combining with BJ's code. No benefit.

I'm a total newbie at this..and this is the first time I'm renting a car..So let me know if I'm doing anything wrong.

This is what I've found out so far.

Pickup & Drop Off: Hartford, CT
Pickup Date: Sept 17, 2012. 08:00am
Drop off Date: Sept 25, 2012. 08:00am
Type of car: small car for 2 people ( economy )

Used Priceline.com and Breezenet.com (which I think uses the same search engine as Priceline, but I could be wrong)

Enterprise: Economy
$ 278.99. WITHOUT any code.
Using XVC1092 makes the price go up to $288.04
Using 36A7933 gives me $258.57

Hertz: Economy
$252.44 using 1911795.
Applying 36A7933 for enteprise (Above) shows me Hertz in the search results too- for $243.36

Avis: Economy
$297.52 using MUWA159

Budget:
Using Y126500
gives me $193.42 for Economy and Compact!!!
$196.13 for a Mid-size car
$202.88 for a Standard and Full-Size car!!!
And as such I'd probably go for a Standard Car.

This is probably the best price so far.
The same price was also available on Budget.com THOUGH... on the search results page, it said - You'll be asked to provide proof of USAA affiliation when you pick up your vehicle."

So now what?? Obviously I don't have proof of USAA affiliation. If I use Priceline, then payment is due only when I drop off the car. So would they not check, if I used Priceline?

Also- Would buying the Entertainment book card help me any? It's available for $2 on eBay.

A Huge Thank You to anyone who is reading this. I appreciate any help that I could get.

Hopefully there is enough useful info in this enormous thread and the FAQ's that people can get educated and draw their own conclusions.

In answer to your question, tho... it can NEVER hurt to spend $2 to buy an Entertainment card. If you google I think you can find the codes and deals available... if I recall they were posted on Flyertalk.

And again, to reiterate-- better not to mess with iffy codes, expect that you will be asked for id--- even if NO ONE EVER HAS BEEN BEFORE.

Elvis has returned to the building!!

However I don't think there are going to be any encores.

The new fearless leader, Whatelse, lasted a few days and hasn't returned in roughly six months.

He trashed the efforts of Riaesq and the other contributors and said he would take over and make it better.

Now the thread is overrun by people who want somebody else to do all the work in getting them a good rate, while they do nothing on their own behalf.

Looking at the last several pages of the thread you can see that once people are asked to provide three quotes, they seldom come back and provide the information.

So if anybody needs a quote, please PM Whatelse since he indicated that he is taking over the thread.

An observation:
Using Priceline to save money without bidding is generally a waste of time. I'd be very surprised if you saved any money that way.
OTOH, bidding with PL can save you a ton of cash. Be sure to educate yourself first. And it's generally better done very close to rental time, as you will be locked in and there are no refunds.

rated:

Well you answered one already with the hint about bidding closer to the needed date on Priceline...

Here's the questions - I've googled them and haven't been able to find a sensible answer.

1. Can I use a CDP code with "name your price" on Priceline?
2. Having never used this service before, I'd like to ask you, based on your experience, do I have a good chance of getting a lower rate with "name your price" than using the regular reservation with CDP? Just wondering...

3. How is a "day" calculated? Is it 12am -12am? Or is it 24hrs since the time of rental? Because since I'm being charged for the 8th day (and won't receive the weekly rate for that day), I thought maybe I could return it on the 7th day in the evening?
Or is it already technically the "next day" if I rented the car at 8am? then do my 7 days end at 8am of the 7th day?

I had a few more, but managed to find answers to them.

Came across these BUDGET codes during my research (I'm mainly focusing on Budget, since I'm getting the best rates there)

AARP- BCD # Y508501 takes 25% off. No expiration date given, but definitely valid through September.

Costco- http://www.costcotravel.com/#12_rentalCars_budget. Lots of codes there.

This one worked the best for me -
BCD# W852802 COMBINED WITH Coupon# MUGZ029 - Expiration Date - 12/15/2012. upto 30% Off + $30 off your weekly rental.

Another site I used that has a nice collection of codes - http://www.rentalcodes.com/budget.html

Gotta ask again... did you read the FAQ's? Link given in the past day or two.
Day begins at exact moment of rental and continues for 24 hrs.
Usually a very short grace period of 29 min or so... after that, an hourly or daily charge... this can work for and against you (addressed in faq's)
NO to #1.
Check the bidding sites to see what's been charged lately in the area (also in the FAQ's)... Biddingfortravel is a good one to check
You have a lot of time before bidding.

J129,

Re using Budget, if that's what you end up with be sure to join the Quick Break Club, which gets your license, credit card info and insurance registered with Budget BEFORE you travel. I am in Vegas now...used Costco to get a really great rate on a mini-van, and made the BIG mistake of not going to Quick Break (actually I asked a CSR if I had to go through the line because I had a Costco purchase and she said YES, which is wrong...I could use Fast Break with Costco as the drive away gate recognizes the Fast Break membership when you present your cc.

Well! We waited in line forever because all the reps were upsellimg HARD! First, they wanted me out of my good deal mini-van and into a guzzler I didn't want for more money. Next we got detailed descriptions of every possible problem we cold run into unless we added 3 kinds of insurance. My wife was convinced we would be sued and tattooed with out the spiffs they were
selling. Of course these were worthless given our policies and CCs.

Finally, my agent had switched our insurance recenty and I couldn't recall the full name of the new company, so this guy enters "uninsured" in the agreement sending my wife ballistic. The sob did that to make us reconsider my no spiffs decision. I called my agent as we were driving up The Strip and my agent promised to fax proof of insurance to our hotel and explained why we were totally covered to my wife, who was totally unglued by now picturing the two of us in jail after a fender bender!

So. Join the club and avoid the sweat salesmen at check in.

All rates for Hartford,CT. on Priceline.com
Sept 17th - Sept 25th. 8-day trip.

Using BCD # Y126500. (Requires USAA affiliation)
gives me $193.42 for Economy and Compact
$196.13 for a Mid-size car
$202.88 for a Standard and Full-Size car

Using BCD # Y508501. (Requires AARP membership)
gives me $211 for Economy and Compact.
$227 for a Mid-size car
$238 for Standard and Full-size.

I've reserved the Compact for $211 on Priceline for now...I figure I'll keep checking and also bid on Priceline later on and in either case, I'll have my reservation to fall back on, since it's the best price I found so far.

I also found prices on Budget.com and rentalcars.com to be higher.

I know you are putting in the effort, good job. BUT this info has no meaning without sharing the prices you get.
PLEASE READ THE FAQ's and the most recent few pages of the thread. Reading more than that can't hurt and while cumbersome, is probably a better use of your time than running all over the web.
Hang in there. It's a learning process that will serve you well the next time.

Thanks for the suggestions...and sorry for being a total n00b here...but what exactly am I doing wrong, apart from the fact that i didn't post the rates..which I just did.

I've read the FAQs. http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/travel-discussion/1010946/ More than once. and I keep looking over the last few pages...I even went back until the appearance of "WhatElse" and read and understood what happened between you.

I also don't know how to add these codes to the quick summary section on page 1.

So if I'm doing something wrong again and again...I'd truly appreciate it if you pointed it out to me than telling me to go read the FAQs. Because maybe I'm missing it? Since you've had to tell me a couple of times to go read the FAQs...and I come back and post...and then you tell me to go read them again. I'm not dumb. I really am trying...I just have a poor idea of how forums operate.

Hey J, good work, I just wanted to know that you have in fact read the FAQ's, since you never responded that you did.

It drives me crazy that they don't show up for me-- is anyone else having trouble finding them? I think it's a glitch in the system. They are supposed to be stickied to the top, and imho that should be regardless of which way you are viewing the thread. They are too valuable to get lost and should be required reading before posting.

It's not you personally, it's that you have the misfortune of posting at a time when I have mostly given up hope for this thread, largely thanks to your pal WhatElse (did you pm him btw? please do! ) Occasionally I jump in if there is something interesting.
Been waiting 6 months for him to fix the thread lol. Great job so far, huh? So much for an understanding of "working" codes.

If you have read the FAQ's, you know better than to use quotes you don't qualify for and what the results can be, since at least three examples are given.
You also know to book the lowest price and keep checking, especially for Last Minute Specials; and that prices literally by the minute. You also know to sign up for EC and other loyalties and stay tuned to emails.

Reading even old pages of the thread is a good leisure time activity btw. Kinda like picking up an encyclopedia and learning a few facts about this or that.

Lastly- did you try sjdude's codes?

Good luck, hang in there, and who knows, you may learn enough in your research that YOU can help someone else.

I see in that other thread with the FAQs that you and others have repeatedly asked for it to be stickied...but that hasn't happened so far... So I just saved that page as a separate bookmark. It's an excellent tool for us newbies! Thank you!

I tried his sjdude's codes- they showed me rates ranging from $300 upwards. So I am going to stick to the reservation I made right now and keep searching on Priceline to see if the prices fall... Towards the middle of August, I'll try bidding on Priceline and see if I can get a better rate.

Also- Not going to use that USAA code...though it pains me so! I am not going to risk them asking me for proof and then having to pay $100-200 more. I have a AARP membership- so I'm going to use that (and the AARP code gives me a price that's only $18 more...so it's not too bad)

I haven't sent "WhatElse" a pm... Don't think he plans to return...It's easy to criticize others and point out what they're doing wrong and so much harder to pick up the yoke of burden and do the job yourself. But then again, WhatElse is new?

Try breaking your rental into multiple segments and then calling the rental company to see if you can combine the segments together. Instead of rending from Day1 to Day8, try from Day1 to Day3 and Day3 to Day8.

Try having one segment include a Fri-Mon or Sat-Mon. Play around with how you break the segments down to see if the rates change.

I came across this recently as I'm currently trying to rent a passenger van. When I did 5 days in a row, it was costing me close to 3X the cost of breaking my trip into 2 segments. Unbelievable to me, but there must be some logic to the madness (not that I understand why).

So instead of paying 450+taxes, the estimate was like 1200+ taxes.
