I will be taking my two kids, 16 and 11 to NYC for a quick sight-seeing trip. We will be staying in Manhattan for two nights, one right near the NY Stock exchange in lower Manhattan, and one night in Midtown West. I got really great rates on Priceline for these four star hotels.
My eleven year old son will be having a birthday on one of those days when we are there. I know that there are special things to do for girls on birthdays, like at the American Girl store. But, does anyone know of any special things to do for boys on their birthday? I know that there are thousands of things to do and see as it is while we will be there. But I was just thinking, maybe I could plan ahead and do something really cool for him on his big day. A restaurant, an event, or whatever. He loves action figures, comic books, skateboards, spongebob, and looking at guns and armor. I did a google search and didn't find anything in particular.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Skip NYC...The Tower of London is where you should be visiting.

Your son will love Henry VIII's armor.

Thanks for the reply, DSJ. I don't have the means to go to the Tower of London. Believe me, if I could, I would. I bet it's amazing.

Especially on the 500th anniversary of Henry's coronation.

Go to the MET and see the Armour/Sword/Gun collection. Then a 10 minute walk south/east of there to
Dylan's Candy Bar and treat him to a cupcake at their cafe, they do birthday parties there, but it's probably for a larger group.

Thanks to all who have given such great suggestions! I am coming up with a plan now, somewhat.

I have also been emailing the concierge at the hotel we will be staying at one night of our trip, The Royalton. The concierge has been very helpful with suggesting options for us. One thing that really sounds good that was suggested was to have a little cake made by the Magnolia bakery. We get thrilled by just the littlest things in life, so I am sure that this will be a hit.

I really recommend to contact the hotel ahead of time when you have special needs or circumstances. I will report on how everything went when we get back home.

Care to share the names of the hotels and how much you paid?

Top of the Rock @ the GE Building.
See if you can get tickets to get to the crown of the Statue of Liberty, but I think they are all sold out, but you could look.
Central Park is cool. Times Square @ night.
Staten Island ferry is free...
Yankees/Mets game? (Should be easy to get Mets tickets )

tripadvisor.com is usually good on finding things to do. Just search for New York

I first got The Royalton, 4 stars, Mid-Town West, for $105 for one night. It looks like a shic upscale boutique type of place. I'm sure my kids and I will stick out like sore thumbs. At the time when I bid and got this hotel, I thought we were only going to be staying one night. The Royalton Hotel website
Then, I figured out a way to stay for two nights and I tried to get another night at the Royalton but was shot down by Priceline and there is no way that the hotel would offer me that rate if I called them. Their rates are well over $250/night normally. So I started bidding and couldnt seem to get another four star hotel anywhere where I wanted in Manhattan.
So, I went down to three 1/2 stars and got the Club Quarters in the Financial District for $105/night plus tax. It's right next to the NY Stock Exchange. It isn't your typical hotel. Usually it is for business people to join with an annual fee or something and get reduced rates based on what they or their company pay.Club Quarters Hotel website
I'm a little disappointed that we couldn't stay in the same place for two nights, but maybe we will end up seeing more of the city that way. We will be getting dropped off at the Staten Island ferry and will take the ferry in to the city. It's free and also a great way to see the statue of Liberty. And we won't have very far to walk to get to the Club Quarters hotel from the ferry.
The trip all started when I was invited to a "girls' weekend away" by my sisters in law to meet up in Atlantic City, but it morphed into something entirely different. My two kids and I will be staying three nights in Atlantic City and then hitching a ride with one of the sisters in law to NYC. Then, after two nights and three days in NYC we will be flying home from White Plains, NY. It offered the least expensive flights back to Orlando when I compared it to Laguardia, JFK, Newark, and even driving back to Atlantic City.
I still have to figure out what we will do with ourselves in A.C. for three days. I have no interest in most of the activities that are available in A.C.. I think that for at least one day we will take a rental car to Philadelphia and check out the sights there. We are big into museums, food, nature and history, none of which (except for the beach) here in central Florida are in high abundance. So it will be a nice change to see things up north.
If anyone has any suggestions for what might be fun to do around Atlantic City with a teenage and and eleven year old boy, I would love to hear it.

thanks for all of the great advice, everyone! We had a blast and were utterly exhausted by the end of the trip.
As far as the hotel stays go, we really liked the Club quarters. It had great amenities and the lady who checked us into our room upgraded us to an executive suite for free when i told her about the b'day.
It may not be everyones' top location choice, but it worked out really well for us. it was right by south street seaport, which had a ton of decent dining options and was really safe to walk to at night.
the royalton was a little bit of a letdown. it was in a great location, right by rockafeller plaza and was extremely chique. but it was so dark in the lobby that it was rediculous, and the room was dark as well. i had emailed the concierge about my son's b'day ahead of time, but they seemed to be too cool to care about it much when we checked in. i asked them about ordering a cak 4 my son in the emails and the concierge said thhat she'd get back to me w/ prices, but, when we got back to the room after a full day on th town, our door had been left wide open for who knows how long with all of our luggage and my macbook and the cake was sitting on a table. when i tried to call downstairs about it, the phone didn't work. i felt so wierded out by it that i had us all go downstairs to speak to someone about it. the second phone didn't work either. then, i wanted a drink from the mini bar and when i tasted the little bottle of water, someone had refilled it w/ water and left it there. Gross! But, the manager comped us all a breakfast which we took full advantage of. we ordered whatever we wanted and the bill came out to $180! thank goodness it was on the house! the bed was nice but small and the view was of brick walls.
I highly recommend the "top of the rock" over empire state bldg. the vistas were amazing. central park was beautiful, and my favorite meal was carry-out from Russ and Daughters. Bagels, cream cheese and the best lox in the world. it's located near soho. the staten island ferry was also really great, especially 4 the price, free. We flew back home via white plains airport. it's a really small airport but cheaper than the other ones closer in and a nice, inexpensive train and bus ride out of the city. for the 3 of us it was less than $20 there.

Glad my kid never had to do this.
