Long story short, we have one full day in Orlando and want to go see MGM studios. We know NOTHING about Disneyworld so we're not sure what type of tickets to buy. We'd like to buy online as it will most likely be cheaper.
What kind of tickets do we need to get into MGM for two adults for one day only?
Someone had told me 1 day base tickets?? Is this correct?

YES. But you probably won't save much, if anything, online. You will, however, save a little time waiting in line. When are you going? DO study up before you go so that you understand FastPass- you will NEED one for Toy Story and probably for R&R Coaster- and know in advance which attractions you want to see the most. It's a gorgeous park, especially if you appreciate the architecture, so there is always something to look at- but it really helps to have a plan! If you plan to dine there at a sitdown place (there is a very good one in the park, and the counter service there is not fabulous) then make a res in advance there or on the Boardwalk, which is a quick boat ride- Kat Cora just opened a new restaurant there!
A park hopper ticket allows you to visit multiple parks in the same day. So if yoy plan on just visiting MGM, it would be a waste of money. Options for single day tickets are slim as are discounts.
I assume the sit down place is the Brown Derby. Nice place, but you can easily drop $100 on a dinner for 2. I would recommend the 50's Prime Time Diner for dinner for the experience. You can read up on it on the web.
Hopping will add over $50 to the price of your ticket. I would say it depends on what the operating hours are for the parks that day, how early you arrive at MGM (which is quite doable in one day, btw, with a plan- unlike Magic Kingdom) and how much stamina you have.
Along the same lines as riaesq said, I also recommend you research whether it's an Extra Magic Hour day, because if it is, it's likely to be more crowded and the success of Fast-Pass may be minimized.

Thanks, Karen
Some advance research and planning will help you avoid the dreaded "standing in one spot while turning slowly in a circle trying to decide what to do/where to go next" syndrome.
Long story short, there are very rarely deals available on the 1 day passes. Adding the hopping option (to visit another park in the same day) is ridiculously expensive (as a % of the single day ticket price) and not worth it, as you'll have your hands full in one park.
The good news is- you don't have to decide in advance on the hopping. If you get to the park at rope drop, have seen and done everything you want to do by lunchtime, you have the option of adding the hopping any time that day. Could be you want to take a short nap or a break in the pool, then head over to Epcot or Magic Kingdom for another 5 or 6 hours- you can do so by adding hopping at the guest relations window. It really depends on your energy level.
Getting a res at Prime Time at this late date will be difficult. Maybe a very late lunch or a very early dinner. Do stop in and see it tho, it's great!
While in the Studios (it's really not called MGM anymore) be sure to experience the street entertainers (Streetmosphere). They add so much to the fun and so many people miss them in their rush to get to the attractions.
