Need hotel advice near/accessible to Universal Park and Walk of Fame in Hollywood area. Dates: 7-9 Oct 2009 Departing: Lax 2 Adults 2/3 nites $100/nite if possible Activities: Universal, Walk of Fame, Studio Audience,??? My research: Any descent hotels around Hollywood I've seen are usually $150 or more + $$parking. Also, we have a rental car but I read we might be better off to take public transit and stay farther from the park/Hollywood area??
We're from Canada and have never been to California or a really big city like LA so we're not sure where and what is safe as far as local areas and public transit???

I've read A LOT that CA, and LA, in particular, is one of the least mass transit-friendly places in the whole USA, so it may not be too advisable to rely so much on it...
Socal is all about driving, the mass transit system sucks...
A rental car is essential, along with a good GPS (some rental car companies have them available for rent).
My suggestion is to look out into the valley for hotel accommodations.

I would suggest not staying IN Hollywood. Some of the major hotel brands aren't exactly in the nicest neighbordhoods. Plus you later find out the hotel either has no parking or expensive valet.
As DKCS said, try finding a hotel in the valley [Studio City & Burbank if you don't want to be too far out]. Sportsman's Lodge is actually a decent place to stay at. It's by the 101 Freeway and a 10-20 minute drive to all the touristy stuff you want to do. On top of it, Ventura Blvd. has some great restaurants.
If you want to be in Hollywood, there's a Day's Inn at 7023 W. Sunset. According to Hotels.com, for those dates, it's 85/night. I would call and ask how much their parking is. Otherwise, it's actually near streets where you don't need a parking permit to park on the street. Also, see what guests have said. But it's also near all the clubs/bars if you're planning a night out.
As far as public transportation goes, LA isn't as great as NYC or other big cities. But it works.
I live in L.A. and its true, our public transportation sucks. Everyone and their mama drives in L.A. Anything on Hollywood Blvd is pretty crappy. The only place in hollywood that isn't crappy is from highland to orange (which is where the kodak and mann chinese theatre is). If you want to stay somewhere nice and safe, I would say West Hollywood would be your best bet. It's between Beverly Hills/ Westwood/ Hollywood. Renting a car would be the best bet because everything is soooooooo far away from each other. If you have any more questions about L.A., let me know
Check out Biddingfortravel. A while back we got a GREAT deal in Manhattan Beach, which was about 20-30 minutes or so from downtown but the deal we got was well worth the drive and it's in a gorgeous area, walking distance to the beach. We got Residence Inn for 45/night, includes a full breakfast, light dinner and free parking, full kitchen, fireplace- and a Trader Joe's around the corner . Of course you might pay a bit more now but this was definitely one of the best deals we've ever had.
I live in Metro LA. Hollywood is quite a bit from LAX. You would probably need a car. If you want to do public transport, I believe you can take the "FlyAway" bus from LAX to Downtown LA Union Station. You can then take the subway from there directly to Hollywood and Highland...and the same line takes you to Universal Studios. There is an outdoor shopping center called "CityWalk" next to Universal Studios. It's an interesting concept...it looks like a cross between Las Vegas and an outdoor shopping center.
I think you might want to consider staying in Universal City near Universal Studios. The subway is just next to Universal Studios, You can take the subway to Hollywood and back..they even have a lot to leave your car.
Have you consider Motel 6. http://www.Motel6.com/reservations/motel_detail.aspx?num=4044
I know it's not top of the line lodge. Looking through the link above their rate are ~$70 + $10 parking. You would miss out on the breakfast and other services.
LA area is HUGE. It is 90 miles east to west and 60 miles south to north. Given that you are coming during the week you are going to have to deal with traffic. Morning commute starts at 6 AM and does not start to lessen until 9 AM and evening commute starts around 4 PM and starts to peter out around 7 PM. Traffic in LA is a bear and extremely heavy. So keep this in mind about where you stay and what you do. Give yourself plenty of time to get places especially back to the airport depending on when you need to be there. Know where you are going and how to get there. GPS would help in that regard. So I second that recommendation.
This is the Angelino. Very nice hotel, close to the Getty Center and Westwood/UCLA and not far from the beach. If you call teh hotel, they have a $99.50 per nite rate right now. You can easily get to Hollywood from there. Much closer and nicer than staying in the valley! Also, look @ biddingfortravel.com Enjoy your stay!

yes, LAX is the way to go if you have a car. I've stayed at the Crown for $60-80 per night more than once. Parking is $12 per night. I've also stayed at the hilton down the street for the same prices. try Priceline at the last minute if you can afford to wait.

So if you are just going to do the Hollywood/Universal attractions, you do not need a rental car. Take the money for that and put it to a better hotel room. You can take the super shuttle from LAX to your hotel. Or take the Fly-away from LAX to union station, then the red line to Hollywood/Highland.
I've lived here a long time and I don't care what the other posters say, Hollywood is much much much cleaner and safer than it was 5 years ago. On Highland about 3-4 blocks north of Hollywood blvd there is a Holiday Inn express. Clean and a short walk to Hollywood Blvd. The red line subway will also take you to Universal Studios, it's the next stop after Hollywood/Highland. So for being here 2-3 days, you don't need a car. In my opinion. Thousands of people take public transportation in the city. It's better than most cities but it's mainly buses, I think most people complain because the subway system is not as big as it needs to be. I have friends who live all over the city and they have problem getting where they want to go on public transportation.
If you are coming out here just for the "movie" experience then Hollywood is your best bet.
Other hotels, Renaissance Hollywood hotel(Marriott run hotel), Roosevelt Hotel, hilton Universal Studios, Sheraton Universal Studios. Trying calling some of these hotels to see if they have any packages or deals.
