What are my chances? Front Desk Tipping: NYC

Thanks to all FWers for providing Vegas front-desk tipping advice. What are my chances for something similar in New York City? I will be travelling there on business for 5 nights and staying at a 'cheap' hotel (thank you, Company). According to the reviews this hotel has a whole lotta teeny tiny rooms and some newer renovated rooms with a flat-screen, etc.

Can I pull the same $20 sandwich off or would it just be crazy?

I tried it at the hilton outside of times square and was shot down. They asked if I was trying to bribe them ... they returned the money but I asked for a newly renovated room and I got it.

I have never had any luck doing this in NYC, but I use Priceline most of the time.

You'd probably do better with a $50 bill for 5 nights. It is Manhattan. Either way, you will not know until you try.

Should have replied, "yes, is it working?"

Depends on the clerk I would imagine. I don't think hotels have a bribing section in the manual for training employees.

tried it before at milenium hilton (financial district), got upgraded. also tried it at grand hyatt manhattan, rejected.
