When is it that the rental car companies need to "move the cars" and they rent them super cheap one way to get them from one place to the other? I rented from Tampa one way to San Antonio last year in June 12 per day. Now I need PA to Tampa in mid Sept. Hoping it is time to get cars back down to Florida in time for the snowbirds

Not just looking to threadcrap but please mark this post as a Request in the title, it is the rules of the forum and a good idea.

To answer your question, I worked at U-Haul as my first job, only about a year but I got to know the trade well enoug to advise this topic. The truth is they rent out the one-ways much cheaper when either the place you are starting has too many to keep on the lot or the place you are going to doesn't have enough to meet their reservations. You can't predict when these events will happen. There are some common-sense clues like a college town will likely be overburdened with U-Hauls around the end of September, the same concept applies to any conventional rental car. New Orleans is going to be pretty cheap to get a one-way out of after Mardi Gras and a one-way to Vancouver BC is going to be prohibitively expensive around Olympics season. All you can do with one-ways is shop around and keep checking back to see if prices might have changed since you last checked.

Why not simply pick up the phone and try to call the manager at the major car rental chains in the originating area? If they need to move cars, they should be more than willing to offer some pointers.

With airfares so cheap these days, it may cost you more in gas and food to drive...

I'd also appreciate more pointers from people who REALLY know.

I'm observing a somewhat crazy situation RIGHT NOW: one major co. is trying to send a few units "down to FL"; while another major co. is re-locating a few units "out of FL" !!

I think shank already offered some sage advice -- pick up the phone and call Hertz, Dollar, National, etc.

You'll get an answer from someone who REALLY knows and it would be a lot quicker than posting your question to a bunch of anonymous, perhaps less-than-knowledgeable FW'ers (no offence intended) and waiting for someone to respond.
