Hi all,

I'm starting to look into ideas for my honeymoon down the road in late March 2010. I'm seriously considering Tahiti.

Travel dates: 3/21/10 - 3/31/10

Departure city: LAX or SNA

Destinations: (PPT) Papeete, Bora Bora, Moorea

# of People: 2 adults

# of Nights: 9 nights preferrably

Budget: $5000-6000

Activities: lounging, kayaking, fishing, biking, exploring, snorkeling, eating.

What I've researched so far:
It seems, on average, pensions/hotels range from $150 per night and upwards. The overwater bungalows seem to go for at least $700 per night. Airfares seem to start at around $2000 and increase depending on if you fly interisland (aka from Papeete to Bora Bora it's $450~ per head). Do these prices seem pretty accurate? And if so, is it very difficult to get pricing lower than this (assuming that we want to stay in a decent hotel or pension)? Also, in terms of food, from reading around it seems we might be able to get by at $50 per person per day. Is that accurate as well?
After adding everything up, it looks like $6000 would be a *very* base cost for a 9 day trip out there. It certainly would be nice to make the trip cheaper than that though!

Any other islands you would suggest visiting besides those? I definitely would like to visit both Bora Bora and Moorea.
If anyone could share their own experience(s) and advice it would be really great. I'm just looking for ideas!

Thanks guys!

We went for the Asian version of Bora Bora = Maldives...
Here's what we did:
flew to Hong Kong... got a hotel/transport package (arranged ahead of time with Singapore Airline)... stayed in Hong Kong for 4 days, then flew to Maldives, for 7 then back to Hong Kong for another 2-3... 2 weeks total... The total was about $10K... but we had an overwater hut @ the Hiltons... It was definitely worth the money... It's one of those you'll never forget experience...

I did it this way because we squeezed an extra week in Hong Kong for about the same price as flying to Bora Bora.. ($700 to HK + hotel + expenses still less than $2000/pp) also, we get some rest in HK after the long flight, then fully recharged and ready for all the activities in Maldives...

Word of advice: maximize your time there when it's sunny.. we made the mistake of taking it easy the 1st few days when the sun was out, then storm came and rained for 2-3 days (coulda stayed in on those days instead)... Also try the massages there, the started ones are relatively cheap. But you will get hooked (we ended up spending about $1000 on massages, and we are not lavish spenders usually...

Also we went when the economy was good... so now you probably can get it cheaper...

You owe me a beer for typing this out on a Saturday night!

You can save a lot with the Air pass for hopping around islands.

I highly recommend it. Not only do you get to experience new islands - the view from the planes are ridiculous

Check out this forum for all things Tahiti -

Its a forum with more info than you could ever imagine.
Helped me book my honeymoon to Tahiti as well. Loved it there.

Some personal thoughts for what they're worth:
- Papeete - Its a city - I would not stay for more than 1 night - not that great compared to the tropical paradise that awaits you
- Check out Intercontinental.com - (they own Holiday Inn - etc... ) check out their Ambassador program (purchase their most elite status which gives you guaranteed upgrades - Think Overwater bungalow and a free weekend stay with one night paid)
- Food for $50 a day - is pretty bare bones - Not going to happen when your paying resort prices.
- Spend at least 4 nights in Bora Bora. Hit up the snorkeling with sharks tour.

PM me if I can answer anything for you.
Good luck - have fun.
