Im planning to take my bride to Cancun for our Honeymoon. I'm shooting for November 19th. My airfare is free so I will need to book my room seperate. Im looking at places and prices (started with Orbitz). I'm overwhealmed with the hotels and options. I could really use some advice from my FW brethren. I plan to do some sigh seeing and avtivites so I'm not sure all inclusive would be a good option for me. I will not be at the room the whole time but I want to get a nice room and not over pay for it.
I like Beaches, no wild teenagers and somewhere close to Cancun. I'm looking at the Beach/shopping area which I think is a couple miles from the city of Cancun.
Cancun has no beach and no worthwhile shopping. Continue your research to find the former within a reasonable distance from CUN. For the latter, try this: LINK.
After more research it seems the hotel district is on the penninsula and is shaped like a 7. Has anyone ever stayed at any of these resorts? I'm possibly looking at the ME.
Refocus your search on the region called the "Mayan Riviera". Can you rent a car for the week? (Manual transmissions only, I think...) Consider what other activities you hope to be doing --- visiting ruins? snorkeling? scuba? exploring cenotes? ziplining through the jungle? Taking an excursion out to Cozumel?
Based on my experience: Snorkeling: Puerto Morelos, Akumal (walk out from the beach to snorkel; Yal-ku lagoon) Cenotes: saw Dos Ojos (interesting, not hugely impressed, colder water) Scuba: Puerto Morelos, Cozumel Ziplining: Selvatica (also cenotes; touristy but entertaining) Ruins: Tulum (has short beach), Coba (can still climb the pyramid) Shopping/people watching: Playa del Carmen (might want to base yourself out of this region)
There are lots of other places along the Mayan Riviera that offer similar activites, and some ofter lots of things in one place (Xel-ha, for example). You'll find plenty to keep you busy, but if you're not a huge fan of the drunk-teen scene, don't base yourself out of Cancun.
I really enjoyed staying at Ambiance Villas. It's not too far from shopping and the mega resorts (cheap cab or $1 bus that passes in front of hotel) See http://www.kinhabeach.com/
It's only 4 stories, but incredibly fortified. Built with huge brick and stone. Beach is great, and restaurant near beach was reasonably priced. They had meal plans too.
They let me look at a larger unit right on the beach and offered a great upgrade price. Might just require a good tip. So, maybe book cheap room thru a travel site and negotiate for better room when you get there (ask for keys to see room first).
Try staying at the ME by Melia hotel. The settings are romantic and modern....rates are not too bad...

Would not go to Cancun-- I went early summer and major drug/crime issues there. Several of my friends had something slipped into their drinks at one of the bars downtown, would def keep away from downtown. Also found out that the chief of police was killed a week before I got there because he was involved with the cartel too. Beaches were nice, but not worth it for me. Go someplace in the islands or a little more upscale place in Mexico for your honeymoon! I think Cozumel would have been better.

If you want something a little more secluded and away from the main party district, stay at the Westin. It's a three/four star hotel with beach front and standard amenities. However, it's still on the main Cancun tourist peninsula so you're close enough to the other attractions. It's actually the first hotel on the Peninsula after the airport.

Playa del carmen and Akumal are excellent recommendations. I went last summer and the only time i spent in cancun was at the airport. There are a couple of islands that you can ferry over to that are nice. If you are willing to rent a car there are amazing B+B's where you will be the only tourist around. One word of advice: DONT DRINK THE WATER. but also be wary of fruits and vegetables that have been washed in water (ie lettuce) and dont brush your teeth from tap water.
I already booked at the ME for about $200 per night including weekend rates. I booked it direct when cheaper rates were available on Orbitz but by booking it direct I'm guaranteed a king size bed room. I have been burned before and got 2 doubles.
x1huang, What else can you suggest about the ME? I got the luxury ocean front room. The next room up is the Level Loft suite. Maybe, I should have booked that room. Do you think a big tip could yield and upgrade?
