I know this is low season for cruises but this seems to be lower than I've seen cruises go in a few years.

Leaving either New Orleans on the Spirit or Miami on the Pearl or Jewel going Eastern or Western on the weekend of December 5th or 6th 2009 I found $299 7 night inside cabin guarantee.

Cabin total for two including taxes was 765.88 quoted on the Pearl doing the eastern itineary was $765.88 direct from NCL you may be able to save a few bucks using a discounter online (but that can often be more of a hassle than its worth IMO).

Of course you also have to add the 12/day/person service/tip charge NCL adds to your onboard account for a total or $168 for two.

So the bottom line is $933.88 For 7 nights for two is a prety good deal if you don't mind an inside cabin without a window. Add $200 ($100/person) for an outside cabin.

I quoted for two people/cabin

It's optional, not compulsory.

Ask the purser on board how to reduce or eliminate the charge before you disembark on your last day.

These people work on tips. If you cant afford the $12 a day for the usual excellent service, DON'T GO! Different story if the service is awful....

Different story if the service is awful....You can debate the ethics of removing/reducing tips all day long on any dedicated cruise forum. The point was, although automatic, the tips CAN be removed/reduced.

I've seen people TRY to have this removed on NCL. They were being asked by the repersentative what part of the service they were unsatisfied with and trying to say they don't believe in a tip being required. I don't know the outcome but I don't get the idea they easily let you say NO tip but I have heard you can reduce the tip if you can substansiate an area of service that you legitimately did not feel your needs were adequetly cared for.

I've always just thought of it as part of the cost of going on a cruise and budget for it even before these were getting automatically added to the onboard account. Thinking about it ahead beats the last day surprise when you get your folio under the door. We also often tip individually for those that give us exceptional service. To find out lots of the stories about how the automatic tipping goes and what success people have had in getting it romoved I would suggest there are many threads on this on cruisecritic.com

My wife saw the mexican rivera cruise but I didn't find it when I went to post this so I didn't include it.

Scotty (or others with expertise) How is the weather in December on the Mexican Rivera cruises? I thought it can be cooler and a bit rough but I have not done it and that is only from what I read.

In for 1. Leaving on the Spirit Nov. 15th. $736.24 for the 2 of us for 7 nights. Hope the ship isnt a dump.

I tip the old fashioned way...cash to the folks that render service to me. I don't want the House allocating based on some mysterious formula. If YOU ARE TOO LAZY to tip this way, MYOB.

Just got back from a 4 night cruise to the Bahamas from Miami on the Norwegian Sky.
I booked it one day before departure and paid $119 per person, inside stateroom, with taxes came to $377 for the two of us.
Had a great time and didn't mind the extra $12 charge, the staff was great and deserved it. Talked to one of the staff and figured that he was probably only making $5/ hour(along wtih a 10 month contract away from home and working 10-13 hours per day-no thanks)
