Certain promotions (including one for the DeltaAMEX) got you some miles that qualified as MQM miles. Most don't, but some do.
There were lots of good promotions back in the NWA days...thats all gone now.
Anyway, Try the Delta mall and read the fine prints for spending money and getting MQMs. Also, the Delta forum at flyertalk.com is your best resource for tips and tricks.
What airport are you at? There are some short flights that would get you 500 miles minimum (Cleveland/Cinci/Columbus to Detroit, Chicago to DTW or MKE, etc, NY to DC / Boston / Phily, etc..)
Note is that any MQM you get this year that isn't used to get the next status level will carry over to next year. So, next year, assuming you fly about the same amount, you can aspire for gold, which is significantly better than silver.
Not free, but you can get the Reserve card from AMEX. The excess MQMs will be rolled over to next year. Note that for the last 2 yrs, Delta has bumped up people like yourself who fell just a few miles short, but its a gamble.

Call them. I was short a few years ago by 350 or so and they gave it to me. I've heard that if you are within 500 or so, they'll just round it up.

That's true only if you've hit silver.

I believe MQM carryover is only the excess mileage above a status like silver. So if you dont get a status this year, most of those miles dont qualify for status next year. I am three trips short of hitting silver and am trying to make it this year.
Wads - If you call them, I am sure they will give the status as you are very close to the cutoff. Good luck
