Hello,

This is my first time going to NYC as an adult (been there as a kid and don't remember much). I'll be there from 12/12 to 12/17. I'm looking for a room with two beds.

I spoke with friends in NYC and they told me to look for hotels in Alphabet City in terms of best value for location and price. I'm looking for the biggest bang for my buck (ideally <$150).

Any suggestions?

I had no idea where this was until I checked wikipedia.

We're staying in Murray Hill over long T-Day weekend. 3 star hotel with breakfast, close to the subway stop and great reviews on tripadvisor.

139 plus tax through Travelzoo.

Crowne Plaza Meadowlands
Expedia AVG $97/night

Hotel is in a nice convention area and a short ride to Manhattan.

Bus stop right out in street stopping by the hotels in the area gets you to Port Authority right nearby to Times Square and Penn Station.

Free hotel shuttle to the Secaucus Train Station .
Bus stop (#129) to New York City @ corner.

Good place
Hotel was clean and quiet. The complimentary sleeping package was awesome. That shows me that Crown Plaza knows the real purpose behind a hotel- a good nights sleep and rest for travelers. Personally, I didn’t like the color of the floor carpet. The greeting received from front desk on arrival not rude, but could be better. Staff could have said "hello". Greeting by front desk at checkout better. Overall would stay again.

Traveler's tip on local attractions
NJ Transit takes you to Port-Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan, a couple blocks from Times Square. Catch it across the street. About $3.55 one-way.

A must place to stay when visiting New York City
This hotel is a very convient place to stay if you are visiting New York. The city bus is walking distance from the hotel and takes you to New York’s 42nd and 7th street within 20 mins.

Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay
close to everything !

We just got back from the marathon. Holiday Inn Express Manhattan Square Gardens was a nice place. About $160/night for us. HOWEVER, it appears that the holiday rates are a lot higher. You might call the hotel directly (the manager is Gary) and see if they will work something out with you. There are a couple of basement rooms that I think they use for overflow; he might be willing to deal on them. Great location, great breakfast.

If you don't mind staying in Jersey, the Meadowlands is a good choice and you definitely will get more bang for your buck there (or in North Bergen). You'll spend $ and time on transportation, though, so you need to factor that in.

$98 Midtown http://www.lasemanahotelnyc.com/

I have no idea what it is but price/location ratio looks nice.

La Semana is a jacuzzi / "hot sheet" hotel.

Long Island City in Queens has a cluster of brand new hotels. The area is post industrial (and they got rid of the prostitutes and drugs, except at the projects). Yeah, it ain't pretty, so don't plan on doing anything there except walking between the subway and the hotel...But the over half dozen brand brand new hotels are around 10 minutes to midtown Manhattan via 4 different subway lines, one that goes across 42 street, ending at Times Square, another with the next 2 stops at Bloomingdales followed bu Central Park then running down the west side making stops all the way to the tip of lower Manhattan and another running through midtown then down the middle of Manhattan making many stops. These trains allow you to transfer to all the other trains making it an extremely convenient/accessible area at half the price of Manhattan hotels, and as I said the hotels are all very brand new (I work in the area and went to an opening reception for one last Thursday). Google Long Island City Hotels or something and check the proximity to the nearest subway stop.
