dexterali said: wow, green for just the buses being equipped with wifi and power outlets.

what you said. Guess it has been awhile since I was a Greyhound but I am thinking the average passenger on the buses I was on wont use this perk Now a kegerator in the seat would be popular.

This has been around for a while. Even on the less traveled routes, like Burlington, VT to NYC! I'm a fan. The new seats are NICE!

Your thinking is out of date, currently the average bus rider is using their smartphone,netbook/notebook to access the internet while on the bus. I suggest that you ride a Boltbus or a Megabus between Washington and NYC and you will see that internet access is a big deal. Basically, these routes are served by really nice busses equipped with wifi and provide low fares not found on planes or trains (usuallly under $25 one way, sometimes just a $1.

Agreed.

Those living in the NE corridor should check out Boltbus.com. They are subsidiary of Greyhound, but much cheaper. They, too, are wifi and power outlet equipped, and are most likely the same buses, just painted different colors. I think they only cover Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington.

INCORRECT. The average bus rider of BoltBus, Megabus, and the Chinatown bus services might be this customer, but Greyhound (especially outside of the Northeast) is as full of convicts and ghetto types as always. The initiative with new busses is to try to recoup market share that they lost to the Chinatown bus companies and Megabus (BoltBus is a subsidiary, whose success led Greyhound to begin rolling out the new busses under the Greyhound livery in the NE).

As a frequent traveler between NYC and Boston, I find the demographics of the riders on these two bus lines (Greyhound and Boltbus) to be rather strange. Boltbus is DIRT CHEAP and are always full of professional types. Greyhound is more expensive and is always full of "convicts and ghetto types." It's really a weird experience. On the plus side, if Boltbus is sold out (it always is if you buy at the last minute) you can purchase a greyhound ticket through the Blotbus link for only $20! I have done this on occasion when I needed a 3AM ticket. It's also a "priority boarding" ticket!

"Hmm, my iPhone sex offender app must be busted, it shows there are 12 of them within 30 feet of me"

Here's my data point: I live in Seattle and frequently fly across the state to Spokane on Southwest ($29 to $39 fare each way). I rode Greyhound once because it was a bit cheaper. that was an eye opening experience. I agree about the clientele of Greyhound in this corner of the country (smelly, dirty, homeless, felons).

No kidding. Boltbus and Megabus have students and professional types because the savvy internet marketing has reached them. Homeless people & felons aren't always up on the new technology, as well as not being able to book online. I, for one, will be thankful for as long as it goes without the undesirable types knowing of these deals.

Thanks, also, for the information (which I bolded) about buying Greyhound through the Boltbus link. Occasionally, I've needed to take a late night bus to be somewhere in the early morning (like going to Philadelphia) and that will come in handy.

I think a lot of it is just routine - much like Southwest has many people in this country brainwashed that they are always the cheapest airline to the point that people just book with them without comparing prices with other carriers. Many lower income people believe that the bus is still and will always be the cheapest form of travel - I had an acquaintance in Canada who recently took a very long bus trip because she didn't realize that flying was around the same price. It even happened to me - I took a Greyhound bus several years ago from Louisville, KY to Chicago...and I kicked myself in the ass when I found out flying would literally have cost me only $5 more. Never again will I make that mistake!

I just want to add one more perk of Boltbus that hasn't been mentioned yet: No Port Authority.

Because Boltbus drops you off at 34th and 8th, you get to avoid the depressing/scary/nasty building that is known as the Port Authority.

I agree. There is nothing worse than waiting at the Port Authority.
