Enouraging to see Alaska offering mainland flights - if successful, should put some price pressures on the major carriers, who have been taking advantage of the demise of Aloha, ATA.

San Jose Airport is completing a major renovation, is now quite an impressive facility, and apparently offering incentives for carriers to offer such new service. While a logistical hassle, some good deals may be had by booking a separate flight from your point of origin to SJC - something I am considering.

Which island do I want to go to and does anyone know if the:

To sweeten these already low introductory fares, Alaska Airlines Vacations is offering 3 night vacation package deals. Each package includes air transportation and hotel accommodations for the following:

Maui:
Kaanapali Beach Hotel - $599

Royal Kona Resort - $523

are a good deal?

Alaska has been flying to/from Hawaii for years. They even have seasonal service from their hub in Anchorage.

And they're not flying to Honolulu from the Bay Area, which was the primary destination of Aloha and ATA flights.

Did you bother to read the title, check the link - NEW NONSTOP SERVICE FROM SAN JOSE.

To each is own, but I have NO DESIRE to step foot on Honolulu again - if I am paying the bill.

Island selection is a matter of personal preference; In general, Maui is a bit more crowded, touristy; Big Island is a bit slower, less crowded - and the active lava flow is worth the drive from Kona. Food is generally more expensive on the Big Island.

Personally, I would pass on the hotels, and rent a condo on VRBO
.com - should not have to pay more than $100 per night for a decent 1 br, 1 ba in easy walking distance to a beach, without extra cleaning fees, taxes, etc. Eating a meal or two in the condo will also extend your travel budget.

Thanks, we are looking for something that is located near the night life, cheaper cause we are young and not ballin, and able to use our feet or taxis to get around for the most part cause I heard rentals can be expensive.

There is not much in the way of night life on the Big Island, Lahani is the only town with some decent clubs on Maui. It should be possible to find cheap diggs (condo on VRBO
.com, low end hotel) and get around the Lahani area on foot, but you will miss out on sites like the road to Hana and Haleakala Volcano without a car. Take the day trip out of Lahina harbor to Lanai, and pass on the Molikini Crater cattle boats.

Before making ANY Hawaii arangements or plans, pick up a copy of the Hawaii Revealed series from Wizard Publications for the island(s) of interest - you will be glad you did. Available at most bookstores, have even seen them at Costco http://www.wizardpub.com/main/home.html
We went to Maui on March, and sat near a couple who waited until the flight over to open it - and regretted it.

I do not agree with the premise - that Honolulu was the primary destination of Aloha and ATA. From the West Coast, ATA flew charters (for Pleasant Holidays) and eventually their own daily flights to Maui and Honolulu; Aloha's hub in of all place Orange County (and Oakland) had regularly scheduled nonstop flights (not quite daily) to Kauai, Kona and Maui, as well as Honolulu.

My point is simple - in 2007, at the peak of such flights, it was possible to get $250 RT flights - I LONG for those days...
