You might consider other airports- you might be able to snag a DING on SW from PHL. Usually late on NY Eve you can get something, when everyone wants to be at their destination by then.
Travel on Christmas Day, early. You'll lose almost no clock time when traveling West.
Tickets on the actual holiday days are usually well below the cost of the day before. Return on New Years Day, if possible. Basically you have to avoid "everyone else." It's cheaper and more pleasant that way.
