You can take the 105 to the 605, but "quickly" would be a relative term. Here is an hov map and check sigalert a few days before at the time you would be driving to see how conditions might be at your drive time. Weather will also play a large factor - if it is raining, all bets are off.
There is no such thing as "quickly" when it comes to the highways in LA, ESPECIALLY during rush hour. If you hit the heart of rush hour the HOV lanes are like a parking lot, just like the other lanes.

thanks for the scoop (it's been many, many years since I lived over there) ... I am heading to the Arcadia area from LAX
sounds like I just need to work my way up to downtown with the HOV lane ... and then maybe take Huntington Drive or the old pasadena freeway
I guess there is no need to go all the way out to the 605 if it isn't going to be moving anyway
I would take the 110 to chinatown (HOV), then take either: 1. local via huntington drive OR 2. HOV lane from union station to san gabriel exit on 10east.then head to arcadia via rosemead blvd.(san gabriel blvd works too) or something like that
comments: The carpool lane on the 110N is pretty good during traffic hours (i know because I travel 110S and observe the other side of carpool; i usually do 80mph around 5pm) Another plus with this carpool lane is that there are very little entrance/exits into carpool which makes it like an expressway. The bad part is around USC area where the carpool ends. But that's okay because this is around the downtown area where you need to switch freeways to the 10E. Now, if the 10E is clear then you are good to go on that freeway. If it is busy, exit and make your way to union station/chinatown area where there is an entrance to the 10E carpool plane. This is another one of those "express lane" where there is no entrance/exits all the way to el monte (exception: one exit @ san gabriel blvd. this is the one you want to exit).

thanks ... sounds like a good alternative
although my first stop might be In-N-Out --- this would give us the option of stopping in some asian markets or getting some cheap eats on the way
...
In that case... you can make a stop at any of the markets on Valley: 1.) there is Asia Supermarket on Atlantic and Valley (rather small, but on the way) 2.) 99 Ranch just before Valley and Del Mar (in Focus Plaza), you'll also find a Asian snack shop next to the Sam Woo restaurant... 3.) Hawaii Supermarket just after Del Mar and Valley 4.) San Gabriel Superstore on San Gabriel and Valley
Food: 1.) you'll find numerous restaurants on Valley... I recommend: Tasty Garden, Baccali Cafe, China Bistro... 2.) In & Out, you'll find one on Atlantic and Huntington... 3.) The Hat on Garfield and Valley is worth a visit if you are into burgers... but you should know this place, since it's been here forever...
Dessert, drinks: Phoenix Inn... Hands down...= try the Heavenly fruit tea or the mix fruit tapioca with coconut milk...
thanks for the recommendations we had a 99 Ranch Market in Honolulu --- but it closed a couple years ago the Hawaii market could provide us a nice photo op I'll try to keep your recommendations in mind in case we need make a stop
I still remember the Panda Inn in East Pasadena as being a nice sit down place if someone wants to be a bit more upscale than Valley blvd
