In June, my wife wants a family trip (with 2 little ones) to New York City. It's one of the great American cities we never been to but frankly, that city scares me.... the crowds... the noise...the prices.
I'm now looking for plane ticket for 4, hotel stay, and she wants to take a Bermuda cruise.
I'm working on the plane tickets and researching the cruise lines. My plan was to get to La Guardia and stay in a hotel near the cruise port. Are two days enough to look at the tourist sites there? Since hotels there are so expensive, I don't want to overstay. Are there some recommended hotels near the port? Any suggestions, greatly appreciated.

There is no point at staying near where the ship is departing from - you will only need to go there once. The NYC travel forum on tripadvisor.com would be more of a help for hotel suggestions, there are always families looking for hotels. Are two days enough? Let me put it this way - you would still be able to find more things to do and see on the third day.

you could spend 3 weeks there and not see everything. You need to decide what you will do, see the historical sites or go shopping or or go to the museums or go to the theater. Go to nps.gov there are several national park sites there that are FREE and very very good to go to! The big museums are also "by donation" (like Metropolitan Mus., Mus of Natural history, Cloisters etc.); although the suggested donation is about $25 each, you just put down a $20 and say "4 please". and they will give you ticket in. If you want to save money by an all day metro card $8 each; you may ride once every 18 minutes (buses and subway included). Food in the tourist districts can be rather expensive. If you are willing to be adventurous and eat in the little joints (especially any third world food, Indian, Latin, asian, middle eastern). You can pay as from $5-10 per person for dinner even. You can get mediocre to some of the best food ever this way. NYC is very safe these days. Lots of police everywhere, and if you ask if you can take pictures of them with the kids, and butter them up they will help you with everything (ask for food recommendations)! In lower manhattan look for the people dressed in RED, with RED hats. They are part of the lower manhattan development corp. They are there to promote lower manhattan and there to help you figure things out.
