When to book for trip to Vegas in September

My wife and 2 or 3 other couples are planning a trip to Vegas in late September this year. Looking through the hotel deals for Vegas, I noticed that there aren't many deals yet for late September. When is a good time to book this trip? Is the sooner the better?

We'll also be flying to Vegas from Detroit and would like to know when the best time to book airfare is as well. I've done some searching and have found that Spirit seems to have the best prices currently. Is it beneficial to book airfare and hotel together or can it be done for cheaper separately?

Any help is appreciated.

Vegas travel: book flight early and book hotels later. Despite a small increase in attendance Vegas is a ghost town. Rooms will be available and cheap.

just keep checking http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/travel-discussion/704925/ for deals. September is pretty far out but there should be some good deals if you look at the last few pages of the thread. airfare if you just keep checking sites like kayak.com everyday until you find a price you are happy with.

Agreed. I'd say most deals should be available around May-July time frame for September stays - with a few more trickling in later in the summer if they aren't doing well enough.

If you have an idea of where you'd like to stay, sign up for their players club or email lists, in case something gets missed on the thread listed above. I know recently Palazzo and Venetian sent out a pretty good deal to Club Grazie members even if they have never played or stayed at the resort.

Booking the hotel separately will probably get you the best deal (unless a hotel has a deal that includes airfare, which is rare). For most places if you book together you'll get a discounted rate on the hotel, but likely not the best rate and likely without any perks the casino deals usually come with.

Thanks everyone for the tips. I'll keep an eye on the Vegas deals thread and sign up for some of the players clubs. We almost booked at the Encore a couple of weeks ago using the "earlybooking" code but we waited and the price has since gone up $50 per night since then.

I've seen airfare for as low as $89 one way from Detroit to Las Vegas through Spirit but that was two weeks ago. Anyone have any feedback regarding their $9 fare club? Is it worth it or can I expect airfares to come back down?

We go to Vegas from DTW quite often, and most of the time on Spirit. We are in the $9 fare club and last year there were tons of deals to Vegas and other cities of course. This year the sales have been few and far between, although today they did have some sales from DTW (including Vegas) However, even if you dont get a great sale from Spirit, if one of you join the $9 fare club you can all get $9 off each way as long as you book together. Its $39 for the year, so if 6 of you go it will more than pay for itself right there. Keep in mind Spirit, like most airlines nowadays, will nickle and dime you to death. Baggage (min $19 each way), advance seat selection, water, pop, everything is extra. If you gamble at all, I would always recommend booking the hotel and flight seperate as that way you can have any comps earned applied to your room at the end of the trip. If you book together you can use comps for food and stuff, but not towards your room.

We booked 4 nights at the Bellagio in early May for ~$470 per person total including airfare and hotel. We felt like that was a pretty good deal for the Bellagio. The price is probably heavily dependent upon the travel dates and the city you are flying out of. We are going May 6th - 10th and flying out of Raleigh. We booked it through the Bellagio's website. Looks like they don't have booking open through September yet, so you will have to check back later.

If you dont mind flying out of Grand Rapids (about a 2-1/2 hour drive), check out www.allegiantair.com. They have a bogo right now through March 24th for travel and hotel. Must travel between April 1st and September 30th. Flights out of Grand Rapids are done on Mondays and Thursday. I ran a quick pricing test and came up with $652 total for r/t air and hotel on the strip for Thursday arrival and Monday return.

Although booking air and hotel separately is generally a good idea, I frequently find that Expedia has money saving packages. Make sure you price the equivalent package to make sure you are comparing apples with apples. The Expedia fine print says that, after booking, you can make changes to the hotel as long as the hotel itself does not assess a fee. However, I never tested this out. This would allow you to take advantage of future price drops.

I have found hotel and airline packages to be bad deals with additional restrictions. There could be exceptions.
