From 1871 to the 21st century, the story of Little Italy, San Diego has been one of hope and despair, growth and decline, genesis and exodus and today--renaissance-in this hip and historic urban neighborhood. You will laugh, maybe even shed a tear, but you will never forget the story of the local Italians who labored to build one of San Diego's great industries of old. The tour unveils hidden neighborhood landmarks, historic Little Italy homes and makes use of intriguing archival photos showcasing the world that was. Guests visit Prohibition Alley, the lair of the infamous Black Hand which controlled bootlegging and enforced the protection racket in the Italian colony in the 1920's. We also visit the breathtaking historic Italian church built in 1925--unlike any other you may see this side of the Atlantic unless you travel to Italy. Guests wear state of the art wireless headsets/receivers to hear the tour in FM quality sound. The music of the great Italian tenors, Caruso, Lanza and Bocelli, is incorporated into the narrative, using this unique technology. We use headsets and receivers from WILLIAMS SOUND that enable all to hear our tours and lectures in perfect clarity. Tours are only held on Saturdays for the general public.
