$10 Donation to Help Adults Earn GEDs
The Issue: Functional Illiteracy Among Cleveland Adults
An estimated 66% of Cleveland residents aged 16 or older were considered functionally illiterate in 2005–2007, according to a report from Case Western Reserve University. These individuals have literacy levels below the National Educational Goals Panel’s minimum of Level 3, meaning they read below a sixth-grade level and may have difficulty performing everyday tasks such as reading a bus schedule and understanding a prescription. Individuals who are unable to read are often at a severe disadvantage when looking for work and can find it harder to escape from poverty.
The Campaign: Tutoring Adults to Earn Their GED
If 30 people donate $10 to this Grassroots campaign, then Seeds of Literacy can purchase 30 TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) tests and enroll 30 new adult students in its tutoring program to help them earn their GEDs. Adult students work one-on-one with tutors to prepare for the exam’s reading, writing, math, social studies, and science sections. GED qualifications can enable these adults to compete in the job market and secure steady careers. Each additional $10 raised will fund a TABE test and program enrollment for another individual.
