Door County, Wisconsin: Outdoor Recreation and Quaint Towns on the Northwestern Shores of Lake Michigan

The resort community of Door County occupies the outer reaches of a 70-mile peninsula that juts into Lake Michigan, just northeast of Green Bay. Its geography and popularity as a summer vacation spot have led some to call Door County “the Cape Cod of the Midwest.” Spread out amid its 300 miles of shoreline are five state parks and 11 lighthouses.

Peninsula State Park fronts 8 miles of rocky coastline near the town of Fish Creek. Kayakers come to paddle around limestone bluffs here; further inland, you can hike miles of paths that weave through wetlands, forests, and open meadows. In the winter months, you can traverse the park’s landscape on cross-country skis or snowshoes, or zip across 17 miles of scenic snowmobile trails.

Door County is lined with charming, small towns with everything from art galleries to theater venues and historic churches. The town of Ephraim is lined with boutiques and restaurants; you can learn more about the town’s Scandinavian roots on a historic walking tour, which departs from the Anderson Barn History Center and includes stops at some of the Ephraim Village Museums. While you’re in the area, try a quintessential Door County dish: the fish boil. It’s typically a mash-up of potatoes, onions, and whitefish, cooked in a kettle over a wood fire.
