The Plot
In 1936, a few puffs of marijuana—or, as its known here, "devil's weed"—is all that it takes to turn clean-cut high schooler Jimmy Harper into a no-hope teen bent on a life of violence and lust. As Jimmy spirals deeper into chuckle-inducing depravity—sassing his parents, boosting money from charity, visiting terrors upon trusting animals—campy musical numbers such as the swinging “Down at the Ol’ Five and Dime” and showy “Listen to Jesus, Jimmy” heighten and highlight his plight. J.C. himself even intervenes, aided by a chorus of showgirl angels, but Jimmy's in too deep, on the lam in a stolen Packard on the road to over-the-top, satirical moral decay.
Adaptations
Reefer Madness: The Musical began as a completely earnest exploitation film first released in 1936. The plot has been changed somewhat for the stage adaptation, but what remains is the hilariously overwrought tone and warning of the many horrible side effects of just one toke: addicts might be stricken with a case of cannibalistic munchies or even be compelled to play the piano. The musical itself was adapted into a 2005 film, starring Alan Cumming, Kristen Bell, Ana Gasteyer, and Neve Campbell.
Showstoppers
In the film version, Cumming plays The Lecturer, warning parents of the dangers their children face in the show’s titular song:
Also from the film, “Little Mary Sunshine” shows Mary’s descent into sin and depravity at the lascivious hands of vile college man Ralph. But Ralph’s in for a surprise, as he may not be prepared for the inhibitions he is about release upon the world:
Warning: contains sexual situations and adult themes
