$10 Donation to Special Olympics Virginia

The Issue: Limited Opportunities for Athletes with Disabilities

Though many professional athletic events cannot accommodate people of all abilities, the Special Olympics is open to athletes with intellectual disabilities, providing them with opportunities to demonstrate their skills in sporting events. Every two years since 1968, athletes from more than 100 nations have gathered to compete in the Special Olympics World Games. In 2013, South Korea will host the Winter Games, where competitions in sports such as alpine skiing, snowshoeing, and floor hockey celebrate athletic achievement. Four competitors from Virginia are set to attend the games, which are free for athletes.

The Campaign: Flying an Athlete to the Winter Games

If 50 people donate $10 to this Grassroots campaign, then Special Olympics Virginia can purchase a plane ticket for one athlete with intellectual disabilities to compete in the World Winter Games in South Korea. The games take place from January 29 to February 5, spotlighting athletes from around the world as they compete in sports such as snowboarding and figure skating. Four athletes will represent Virginia as a part of Team USA. Each additional $10 raised will go toward funding flights for the other three athletes.
