A dental implant replaces a missing tooth with a crown that looks and functions like a real tooth. During the dental-implant procedure, the dentist places the implant, a small titanium cylinder, into the jawbone. After it has integrated with the bone, the cylinder is fitted with an abutment to hold the crown—the replacement tooth—in place. The time of the procedure varies by patient, and it usually takes from four to six months for the bone to integrate with the implant.
