Ski Adventures in the Canadian Rockies

Rugged peaks—some of the oldest in the Canadian Rockies—rise abruptly from the prairie floor at Waterton Lakes National Park. It may be the smallest of the Rocky Mountain National Parks, but you’d never know it from the miles of backcountry hiking paths, cross-country ski trails, and acres of wilderness inhabited by white-tailed deer, cougars, grizzly bears, and other wildlife. With this Groupon, you can opt for an easy two-day stay with ski rental or a more intense five-day backcountry ski tour.

Option 1: Two-Night Stay at Waterton Lakes Lodge Resort

• The lodge is located in a mountain village in the heart of Waterton Lakes National Park. Surrounded by windswept mountains (cell-phone and Internet service is spotty), you can disconnect from the outside world.
• Vimy’s Lounge & Grill, the onsite restaurant, serves traditional Rocky Mountain cuisine including bison and yak. The upstairs dining room boasts panoramic views of the mountains.
• Guest rooms feature decor by local artists, including unique furnishings carved from wood.
• Boots and ski rentals for two are included.

Options 2-5: Five-Day Guided Ski Tour at Glacier National Park and Waterton Lakes National Park

• The first two days of this guided trek are spent touring the backcountry of Montana’s Glacier National Park. Here there are more than 700 miles of hiking trails and popular drives, including the 50-mile Going-to-the-Sun Road. You can expect to ski and explore from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. each day.
• Guests will spend the first two nights at the Lodge at Whitefish Lake in Montana.
• The remaining days pass at Waterton Lakes National Park. You’ll have two more full days of skiing and one day of leisure. This portion of the trip includes three nights at the Waterton Lakes Lodge Resort.
• Shuttles will pick you up each morning and return you to the hotel each night.
• Some meals are included: four continental breakfasts, five bagged lunches, and four dinners.
• Boot and ski rentals for two are included.

Glacier National Park: Cross-Country Skiing and Snowshoeing Under Big Sky

Although many of Glacier National Park's roads and campsites are closed during the winter, it’s a fine time to explore the sublime natural scenery without the burden of crowds. The Apgar Visitor Center, located at the park's western entrance, hosts free, ranger-led snowshoe walks on Saturdays and Sundays through March. Dozens of other ski and snowshoe trails are accessible along Going-to-the-Sun Road, a stretch of which remains plowed throughout the winter.

To thaw out, travelers can get a hot meal or solicit group hugs from strangers along the main streets of nearby towns Whitefish and Columbia Falls, which are lined with breweries and restaurants.
